Nasal Nitric Oxide as a Biomarker in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Sinonasal Inflammatory Diseases: A Review of the Literature

Jacob J. Benedict et al.

Summary: This article critically reviews the literature on nasal nitric oxide (nNO) and its clinical and research applications in the diagnosis and treatment of different sinonasal inflammatory diseases. The study found that nNO levels are consistently decreased in acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients, especially in cases with nasal polyps. On the other hand, allergic rhinitis (AR) patients have elevated nNO levels, but higher symptom severity in AR cases is associated with lower nNO levels.

Diagnosis and Management of Allergic Rhinitis in Asthmatic Children

Laura Tenero et al.

Summary: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common inflammatory condition in the upper airways, particularly in children. It has a potential impact on quality of life, sleep, and daily performance, which are important in the long term. This review provides an updated overview of AR epidemiology, diagnosis, and its connection with bronchial asthma. AR is a significant risk factor for asthma onset and plays a crucial role in asthma control in pediatric population. Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is a precision medicine approach that can improve AR and bronchial asthma control, and prevent the progression of allergic diseases. Evaluating the eligibility for AIT should be a priority for physicians managing children with AR, especially when combined with bronchial asthma.

Nasal nitric oxide measurement in children for the diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia: European Respiratory Society technical standard

Nicole Beydon et al.

Summary: Nasal nitric oxide (nNO) is an essential diagnostic marker for primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), but there is a lack of guidelines for measuring nNO in pre-school-age children. A European Respiratory Society Task Force has developed this technical standard to standardize the sampling, analysis, and reporting of nNO for PCD diagnosis in all age groups, including pre-schoolers. The task force considers both chemiluminescence and electrochemical analyzers and proposes future research priorities for improving the reliability of nNO measurement in young children.

Nasal Nitric Oxide and Nasal Cytology as Predictive Markers of Short-Term Sublingual Allergen-Specific Immunotherapy Efficacy in Children with Allergic Rhinitis

Giuseppe Fabio Parisi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) effectively improves symptoms of allergic rhinitis in children, especially after 6 months of treatment. By measuring nasal nitric oxide (nNO) and nasal cytology, it can predict the efficacy of SLIT treatment.

Summary: This study evaluated airway nitric oxide (NO) levels in children with house dust mite (HDM)-induced allergic rhinitis, finding a significant correlation between nNO levels and VAS scores, with higher nNO levels in children with severe rhinitis compared to moderate rhinitis.

Clinical Phenotypes of Cystic Fibrosis Carriers

Philip M. Polgreen et al.

Summary: Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder caused by mutations in the CFTR gene, resulting in various medical conditions. Previously, carriers were not considered at risk for the associated diseases, but recent research suggests otherwise. Thus, there is a need for precise assessment of health risks for carriers.

The global prevalence and ethnic heterogeneity of primary ciliary dyskinesia gene variants: a genetic database analysis

William B. Hannah et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the global prevalence and ethnic heterogeneity of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). By calculating the allele frequency of disease-causing variants in 29 PCD genes associated with autosomal recessive inheritance in 182,681 individuals, the minimum worldwide prevalence of PCD was found to be at least one in 7,554 individuals, with higher rates in individuals of African ancestry compared to other populations. The study also identified gene distributions that differ from previous European and North American studies.

Nasal nitric oxide testing for allergic rhinitis patients: Systematic review and meta-analysis

Bingbing Wang et al.

Summary: In patients with allergic rhinitis (AR), nasal nitric oxide (nNO) levels are significantly increased, which can be used to identify AR. However, in patients with nasal polyps, sinusitis, or marked ostial obstruction, there were no significant differences in nNO levels compared to healthy controls.
