Exploring the Dose-Effect Relationship of Bifidobacterium longum in Relieving Loperamide Hydrochloride-Induced Constipation in Rats through Colon-Released Capsules

Xin Zhou et al.

Summary: This study explored the dose-effect relationship of three strains of Bifidobacterium longum in the colon. The results showed that these strains improved fecal water content and intestinal motility, regulated gastrointestinal peptide levels, and changed the intestinal flora composition and metabolite content of constipated rats. Among the strains, FGSZY6M4 was the most effective in relieving constipation caused by loperamide hydrochloride in rats. Therefore, investigating the most effective dose of B. longum at the colon site can help improve the efficiency of relieving constipation.

Therapeutic Potential of Gut Microbiota and Its Metabolite Short-Chain Fatty Acids in Neonatal Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Naser A. Alsharairi

Summary: Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by gut microbial fermentation play a beneficial role in metabolic health. They maintain gut homeostasis, enhance gut barrier integrity, and reduce gut inflammation through epigenetic modifications. Although there is evidence of the therapeutic implications of SCFA-producing bacteria in infant inflammatory diseases, such as obesity and asthma, its application in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is limited. This literature review aims to summarize the evidence on the therapeutic potential of gut microbiota and SCFAs in neonatal NEC.

Current Patterns of Probiotic Use in US Neonatal Intensive Care Units: A Multi-Institution Survey

Morcos Hanna et al.

Summary: The study assessed the use of probiotics in NICUs across the United States. The findings showed that there is likely an increase in the use of probiotics, but there is significant variability. The AAP statement on probiotics had a variable impact on the use of probiotics in NICUs. There is a need for better product regulation and consensus guidelines to ensure standardized use.

How frequent is routine use of probiotics in UK neonatal units?

Neaha Patel et al.

Summary: A survey conducted in neonatal units in the UK found that over 40% of the units are routinely using probiotics, but there is variability in the products used. Further research is needed to determine if the use of probiotics can lead to improved clinical outcomes.

Dose-Response Efficacy and Mechanisms of Orally Administered Bifidobacterium breve CCFM683 on IMQ-Induced Psoriasis in Mice

Xinqi Chen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the dose-response effect of Bifidobacterium breve CCFM683 on relieving psoriasis and its underlying patterns. Specifically, the expression of keratin 16, keratin 17, and involucrin were substantially decreased by specific doses of the probiotic. Moreover, the gut microbiota in mice treated with the probiotic was rebalanced and the concentrations of colonic bile acids were positively correlated with the effectiveness of the strain in relieving psoriasis.

Probiotic sepsis in preterm neonates-a systematic review

Tithi Kulkarni et al.

Summary: This article reviews the reports of probiotic sepsis in preterm infants. The study found that probiotic sepsis is relatively rare in preterm infants, and the majority of cases recover after treatment. The importance of monitoring and treating probiotic sepsis, as well as researching alternatives to probiotics (such as postbiotics), is emphasized.

Neurodevelopmental and growth outcomes of extremely preterm infants with necrotizing enterocolitis or spontaneous intestinal perforation

Carlos Zozaya et al.

Summary: The study evaluated neurodevelopment and growth in extremely preterm infants, finding that spontaneous intestinal perforation, necrotizing enterocolitis, or any bowel perforation are risk factors for death or significant neurodevelopmental impairment in these infants.

Factors associated with neurodevelopment in preterm infants with systematic inflammation

Eun Sun Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that systemic inflammation induced by clinical infection and NEC is associated with neurodevelopmental impairment in preterm infants. Seizure spikes on aEEG, elevated I/T ratio, CRP, and plasma TNF-alpha levels during inflammatory episodes are associated with poor neurodevelopment outcomes.

Summary: The administration of probiotics in children has been studied extensively worldwide, showing significant benefits. However, due to study heterogeneity and risk of bias, there is currently no broad consensus on specific probiotic strains, doses, and treatment regimens for certain pediatric indications.

Probiotics for the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Clare Goodman et al.

Summary: Probiotics, when co-administered with antibiotics, can reduce the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea in adults. Higher dosages and certain species of probiotics have shown increased effectiveness in preventing AAD. These findings may not apply to clinical scenarios with lower baseline AAD risk.

Summary: A study assessing neurodevelopment of babies diagnosed with NEC more than a decade ago found that 61% of the patients had neurological impairment, affecting their long-term quality of life and function. This highlights the hidden neurological burden in the field of NEC, emphasizing the need for appropriate parent counseling at the point of diagnosis and regular development checks for children with NEC.
