The combination of two Bacillus strains suppresses Meloidogyne incognita and fungal pathogens, but does not enhance plant growth

Valter Cruz-Magalhaes et al.

Summary: Bacillus strains BMH and INV, closely related to Bacillus velezensis, individually reduced the number of galls and eggs of M. incognita by more than 90% in tomato roots. However, when combined (BMH + INV), the suppression of RKN and tomato growth was lower compared to single-strain applications.

Plant-associated Bacillus and Pseudomonas antimicrobial activities in plant disease suppression via biological control mechanisms-A review

Ivica Dimkic et al.

Summary: Biocontrol strains from the genera Bacillus and Pseudomonas play beneficial roles in plant health by directly inhibiting pathogens, promoting plant growth, inducing systemic resistance, and producing bioactive compounds like lipopeptides and volatile substances. These bacteria are effective against a wide range of phytopathogens and pests, enhancing plant defense mechanisms and inhibiting pathogen growth through various mechanisms like antibiosis, ISR, and competition for resources.

Potential of the coffee endophytic Bacillus cereus sensu lato strain CCBLR15 to control the plant-parasitic nematode Radopholus duriophilus

Benoit Duong et al.

Summary: The Bacillus cereus strain CCBLR15 has been found to efficiently induce the mortality of coffee-parasitic nematodes. This study further characterized the strain and found that its nematicidal activity is attributed to compounds released after bacterial cell lysis. The study also demonstrated the biocontrol capacity of CCBLR15 in reducing the number of nematodes and inhibiting their negative effects on plants.

Biological Control of Plant Pathogens: A Global Perspective

Rachid Lahlali et al.

Summary: The increase in world population has resulted in higher demands for agricultural products. However, the use of chemical pesticides has caused concerns over their impact on human health and the environment. As a result, researchers have turned to biological controls using beneficial microorganisms, but the development of biofungicides has faced challenges. This review focuses on the gap between the screening of biological control agents and the availability of marketed products, and highlights the obstacles in terms of efficacy and legislation procedures.

Application Potential of Bacterial Volatile Organic Compounds in the Control of Root-Knot Nematodes

Ali Diyapoglu et al.

Summary: Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are highly damaging to crops and the traditional chemical control methods have negative impacts on the environment and human health. Using microorganisms and their metabolites, especially volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as biological control agents (BCAs) shows promise in controlling PPNs.

Crop succession and rotation with surface liming on nematode management and soybean yield

Rayane Gabriel da Silva et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of no-tillage and surface liming on nematode populations and soybean yield. The results showed that crop rotation and succession improved soybean yield and reduced Heterodera glycines population, while increasing the population of Helicotylenchus spp. However, increasing surface limestone rates decreased soybean yield and increased H. glycines population, while reducing the populations of Pratylenchus brachyurus and Helicotylenchus spp.

Management systems for nematode control in soybean fields in south-central Parana, Brazil

Cristiane Goncalves Gardiano-Link et al.

Summary: The effects of winter crops and soybean management systems on Pratylenchus brachyurus and Helicotylenchus dihystera populations were evaluated in a naturally infested site in Brazil. The study found that chemical control reduced P. brachyurus reproduction, while black oat and treatments with abamectin increased soybean yield. However, the results were inconclusive for H. dihystera management.

Biological control: a novel strategy for the control of the plant parasitic nematodes

Gufran Ahmad et al.

Summary: Plant parasitic nematodes cause significant economic losses in agriculture, and biological control using microorganisms like fungi and bacteria is the most effective way to reduce their impact. Nematophagous microorganisms can trap and feed on plant parasitic nematodes, creating potential for successful biological control agents. Understanding the molecular mechanisms behind microbial nematode interactions is crucial for developing effective biocontrol strategies in the future.

Unveiling the structure and distribution of plant-parasitic nematode communities in soybean fields in southern of the Brazil

Luis Alejandro Yanez Marquez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the structure and distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes in soybean fields in the south of Brazil, revealing high taxonomical diversity with 10 genera identified. Different plant-parasitic nematodes showed varying associations with bioclimatic variables, suggesting complex relationships between pest abundance and environmental conditions.
