Improving nitrogen-use efficiency by using ridge tillage in rice paddy soils

Chuan Qin et al.

Summary: Nitrogen (N) fertilizers are increasingly used to meet crop demand, but the nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) in rice paddy fields has been historically low compared to upland ecosystems. This study compared different tillage regimes and found that ridge tillage significantly improved NUE and reduced nitrogen loss in rice-based agroecosystems.

Use of biochar to manage soil salts and water: Effects and mechanisms

Xinqing Lee et al.

Summary: This study finds that biochar exacerbates soil salinization upon application, but after several irrigation-evaporation cycles, it changes salt distribution, facilitates desalinization with little water consumption, and also has anti-fracturing and enhanced salt leaching effects. These findings provide a new solution for agricultural sustainability in salt-affected regions, significantly reducing water demand.

Shifts in root dynamics along a hillslope in a mixed, mesic temperate forest

Edward J. Primka et al.

Summary: Contrary to our hypotheses, the study found no significant hillslope effects on fine root tip production or mortality. However, root tip turnover was higher at drier regions of the hillslope, and fine root standing crop length was higher in wetter topographic regions.

Spatial Variations in Fine Root Turnover, Biomass, and Necromass of Two Vegetation Types in a Karst Ecosystem, Southwestern China

Fujing Pan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that fine root production, biomass, and necromass were significantly influenced by slope position, while the fine root biomass/necromass ratio was significantly affected by vegetation type. The variations in these parameters were mainly explained by fine root nutrients and the interactive effects between fine root and soil nutrients. These findings suggest that fine roots responding to soil and root nutrient changes might serve as an adaptive mechanism to enhance plant nutrient acquisition in nutrient-poor karst ecosystems.

High Heterogeneity of Root Carbon Allocation Affects Root Turnover Rate and Production ofBothriochloa ischaemumUnder Drought Stress

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: This study used 13CO2 as a labeling gas in a 13C pulse labeling experiment to investigate the differences in carbon turnover rate in root populations under drought stress conditions. The findings suggest that drought stress increases short-term carbon allocation to belowground, with fine roots having a higher carbon demand than coarse roots. The study also reveals that the difference in carbon allocation between fine roots and coarse roots may be a key factor influencing the turnover rate in the root population.

Aboveground litter addition for five years changes the chemical composition of soil organic matter in a temperate deciduous forest

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: This study found significant changes in biopolymers (lignin, substituted fatty acids, amino sugars) in soil after five years of aboveground litter addition or removal treatments in a temperate forest, suggesting potential impacts on soil organic carbon composition and stability. Although soil nitrogen and carbon contents were not affected, the presence or absence of aboveground litter had a selective effect on the chemical composition of soil organic carbon in different soil depths.

Smash ridge tillage strongly influence soil functionality, physiology and rice yield

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: The practice of smash-ridging on dry land crop cultivation has shown promising results in improving soil quality, root traits, and rice yield. Deeper ridge tillage results in more plant growth and biomass accumulation, leading to higher yields.

Fine root dynamics across pantropical rainforest ecosystems

Walter Huaraca Huasco et al.

Summary: Fine roots are crucial for the net primary productivity (NPP) of forest ecosystems, with significant effects, but they are less studied compared to aboveground NPP, especially in tropical regions where methodologies are inconsistent. Results showed a positive linear relationship between fine root productivity and sand content in lowland forests, and a positive relationship with mean annual temperature in montane forests, indicating that environmental conditions are important predictors for root productivity.

Water-phosphorus coupling enhances fine root turnover and dry matter yield of alfalfa under drip irrigation

Xuanshuai Liu et al.

Summary: The study showed that the coupling of water and phosphorus under drip irrigation conditions significantly affected the dry matter yield of alfalfa, with the highest yield observed in the W2P2 treatment, indicating that an irrigation amount of 6,000 m(3) ha(-1) and P application rate of 100 kg ha(-1) were beneficial for alfalfa root turnover rate and dry matter yield.

Mowing increases fine root production and root turnover in an artificially restored Songnen grassland

Yan Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that mowing has different effects on fine root production and turnover in different types of grasslands. In artificially restored grasslands, mowing significantly increased root production and turnover, while decreasing root lifespan. However, in naturally restored grasslands, mowing had no significant effects on these parameters, possibly due to higher species diversity.
