Systematic review of mixing technology for recycling waste tailings as cemented paste backfill in mines in China

Liuhua Yang et al.

Summary: The development of the mining industry is closely related to the growth of the industry at large. However, mining activities have a significant impact on the environment due to energy consumption and tailing emissions. The cemented paste backfill (CPB) technology has emerged as a representative solution for mine ground control and tailings management. However, the mixing process in CPB technology faces challenges in achieving uniformity due to fine tailings, high solid volume fraction, and high viscosity. This review summarizes the current studies on CPB mixing technology, discusses the advantages and disadvantages of various mixing equipment, and highlights the challenges and trends in improving mixing technology to promote the development of cement-based material mixing technology.

Effects of forced aeration on community dynamics of free and attached bacteria in copper sulphide ore bioleaching

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamics of bacterial community and copper leaching during low-grade copper sulphide bioleaching with forced aeration. The results showed that appropriate aeration improved bacterial concentrations and leaching efficiencies. Attached bacteria played a significant role in the early stages of bioleaching, while free bacteria dominated the later stages due to the formation of a passivation layer.

Copper sulfides leaching assisted by acidic seawater-based media: Ionic strength and mechanism

Leiming Wang et al.

Summary: The paper critically discusses the utilization of acidic seawater-based media (ASM) in copper hydrometallurgical industries, highlighting its catalytic effects in chemical/bio leaching processes. It also explores the pivotal ions and compounds present in ASM, their regeneration behavior, and the impact on redox potential, reaction activation energy, and leaching kinetics. Furthermore, the potential of ASM as an alternative to freshwater for accelerating copper sulfide leaching in water-scarce areas is highlighted based on previous studies and reviews.

Effect of diurnal temperature range on bioleaching of sulfide ore by an artificial microbial consortium

Xiaodi Fang et al.

Summary: The study found that diurnal temperature range (DTR) has a significant inhibitory effect on bioleaching, especially in the early and middle stages of exposure, gradually decreasing over time. DTR does not change the composition of EPS matrix but has a significant effect on the generative behavior of EPS.

Determination of utilization strategies for hemihydrate phosphogypsum in cemented paste backfill: Used as cementitious material or aggregate

Guanzhao Jiang et al.

Summary: Cemented hemihydrate phosphogypsum (HPG) backfill is gaining popularity as a new branch of cemented paste backfill (CPB) in mine goaf treatments in China due to its low cost and efficient utilization. The gelling activity of HPG decreases with aging time due to its gradual conversion from hemihydrate to dihydrate form. Soluble P(2)O(5) forms insoluble brushite coatings, which significantly inhibit the HPG conversion. Increasing the Al2O3 content and reducing temperature further delay the HPG conversion.

Bioleaching for environmental remediation of toxic metals and metalloids: A review on soils, sediments, and mine tailings

Trung Hau Nguyen et al.

Summary: The industrial evolution has led to the release of a large amount of toxic metals and metalloids into the environment, posing risks to both ecological systems and human health. Bioleaching is a preferable, cost-effective and environmentally safe option for removing these toxic substances.

The use of pyrite to control redox potential to enhance chalcopyrite bioleaching in the presence of Leptospirillum ferriphilum

Maoxin Hong et al.

Summary: The addition of pyrite was found to enhance the dissolution of chalcopyrite in bioleaching processes by controlling the redox potential. Maintaining an appropriate ORP range with pyrite promoted the reduction of chalcopyrite to chalcocite. The effect of pyrite in chalcopyrite bioleaching was primarily related to the redox potential control process.

Bioleaching for detoxification of waste flotation tailings: Relationship between EPS substances and bioleaching behavior

Maoyou Ye et al.

Summary: The production of large volumes of waste flotation tailings leads to environmental pollution and poses a major ecological and environmental risk. This study investigated the bioleaching of these tailings using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, achieving high extraction efficiencies of Zn and Fe. Bioleaching significantly reduced the environmental risk associated with mine tailings by decreasing leachable Zn and Pb, with EPA analysis showing low risk levels for Pb and no risk for Zn, Cu, and Cr. Analysis of EPS showed different organic substances in the LB-EPS and TB-EPS fractions, which played distinct roles in promoting bioleaching.
