Improved design of all-optical half-adder and half-subtractor circuits using MIM plasmonic waveguides for optical networks

Sandip Swarnakar et al.

Summary: All-optical half-adder and half-subtractor circuits are implemented using metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with a footprint of only 66 μm². The design is based on the linear interference principle at an operating wavelength of 66 μm, focusing on the transverse electric (TE) polarization in optical communication. The structures of both the half-adder and half-subtractor are flexible and consist of two Y-shaped power combiners, optimizing performance parameters such as extinction ratio, transmission efficiency, and insertion loss. This device is designed for ultrafast surface-plasmon polariton switching applications and is examined using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique, further validated through MATLAB simulation and mathematical computation results.

Highly Sensitive Multichannel Fano Resonance-Based Plasmonic Sensor for Refractive Index and Temperature Sensing Application

Chung-Ting Chou Chao et al.

Summary: We propose a susceptible multichannel plasmonic sensor for sensing refractive index (RI) and temperature media. The designed structure consists of an elliptical-shaped ring resonator and four metal nanorods side-coupled to two separated metal-insulator-metal waveguides. The structure supports five channels of Fano resonance modes, providing excellent sensing performance with maximum sensitivity values of 4500 nm/RIU for RI sensing and 1.00 nm/degrees C for temperature sensing.

Ultrafast and low-power multichannel all-optical switcher based on multilayer graphene

Guan Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a metal-insulator-metal waveguide structure composed of a hexagonal resonator cavity and a ring with a slit is proposed, and the transmission properties of the structure are studied using the finite difference time domain method. It is found that three distinct plasmon-induced transparency peaks appear in the visible and near-infrared bands with a transmissivity of more than 80%. By adjusting the structure size and using graphene to cover the surface of the cavity, the positions of the transmission peaks can be changed. Based on this effect, an all-optical switcher with ultrafast response and low light absorption is designed, providing a potential solution for the development of visible and near-infrared filters and all-optical switchers.

Parallelized and Cascadable Optical Logic Operations by Few-Layer Diffractive Optical Neural Network

Xianjin Liu et al.

Summary: Optical computing has gained attention for its high speed, low energy consumption, and parallelizable and multiplexable nature. This study introduces a parallel-logic operation strategy based on a two-hidden-layer diffractive optical neural network (DONN), demonstrating its efficiency in multiple-bit (up to 16-bit) optical logic (e.g., NAND) operations. Furthermore, the utilization of NAND-DONN units to achieve NOR and AND operations through flipping and cascading the DONN is demonstrated.
