Summary: Through the recently developed single-shot time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique, the buildup process of an all-polarization-maintaining soliton mode-locked fiber laser is investigated, revealing an optimal range of intra-cavity energy for self-starting and the evolution of pulse competitions, leading to the quick buildup of a dominant pulse against others and achieving single-pulse operation.
