Higher-order topological insulator in cubic semiconductor quantum wells

Sergey S. Krishtopenko

Summary: Through our research, we predict a higher order topological insulator state in common semiconductor materials, theoretically proving the existence of topological corner states in quantum wells and showing that the appearance of corner states depends not only on the crystallographic orientation of meeting edges, but also on the growth orientation of the quantum well. Our theoretical results significantly expand the application potential of topological quantum wells based on IV, II-VI, and III-V semiconductors with diamond or zinc-blende structures.

Higher-order band topology

Biye Xie et al.

Summary: The emergence of higher-order topological insulators with gapless hinge or corner states has expanded our understanding of topological phases. These unconventional TIs have significant contributions to the development of photonic, phononic, and circuit systems, and their discovery has unveiled the hierarchical structure of topological band theory.
