Testing the seismic quiescence hypothesis through retrospective trials of alarm-based earthquake prediction in the Kurile-Japan subduction zone

Kei Katsumata et al.

Summary: The study found that the risk of a large earthquake slightly increases in the years following a long period of seismic quiescence, within tens of kilometers of the area, but the forecast scheme did not perform well in cross-validation. While the possibility of over-fitting cannot be ruled out, the modest gains obtained in the overall test suggest that severe over-fitting is unlikely involved.
