Summary: The qualified presumption of safety (QPS) is a generic pre-assessment method that supports the work of EFSA's Scientific Panels by evaluating the safety of microorganisms in the food or feed chains. The evaluation is based on the body of knowledge and safety concerns of the microorganisms. Some strains, such as filamentous fungi, bacteriophages, oomycetes, and certain bacteria, are excluded from the QPS assessment due to their potentially harmful traits. The QPS list is regularly reviewed and updated, and new TUs can receive QPS status if they meet the necessary qualifications.

From fecal microbiota transplantation toward next-generation beneficial microbes: The case of Anaerobutyricum soehngenii

Summary: The commensal gut microbiota is crucial for human health, while the disturbance of gut microbiota is related to various diseases. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has emerged as a potential treatment method to restore a balanced and diverse microbiota and study the causality of microbiota in disease pathogenesis. However, FMT brings logistical challenges and safety risks. Next-generation probiotics (NGP) or live biotherapeutic products (LBP) that consist of cultured beneficial microbes are considered as a controlled and personalized alternative. This study reflects on the development of A. soehngenii for clinical use, providing practical guidance and discussing the current regulatory framework.
