A Reduced-Scale Physical Model of a Spillway to Evaluate the Hydraulic Erodibility of a Fractured Rock Mass

Aboubacar Sidiki Koulibaly et al.

Summary: The hydraulic erosion of rock mass within dam spillways is an important factor to consider when assessing dam stability. Existing methods for evaluating this erosion phenomenon have limitations and need upgrading or new solutions. We propose a laboratory-scale physical model to determine the effects of rock mass parameters on erosion.

A resolved CFD-DEM coupling model for modeling two-phase fluids interaction with irregularly shaped particles

Zhihao Shen et al.

Summary: A resolved coupling model was developed in this paper to simulate the interaction between two-phase fluids and irregularly shaped particles using CFD and DEM. The model calculates meso-scale flow around particles and directly computes the fluid forces on multi-sphere particles without relying on empirical drag force models. Benchmark cases and a case study on dambreak wave impact on a rock pile demonstrate the accuracy and potential application of the model in coastal engineering.

CFD-DEM coupling with multi-sphere particles and application in predicting dynamic behaviors of drifting boats

Xuan Nan et al.

Summary: This study developed a multiphase fluid-solid coupling solver based on the VOF model and DEM model to predict the motion characteristics and assess the safety of a floating ship. The results showed that the solver was accurate and could capture the settlement trajectory of particles under different conditions. The study also found that the hull weight had a significant influence on the ship drifting motion.

An efficient four-way coupled lattice Boltzmann - discrete element method for fully resolved simulations of particle-laden flows

Christoph Rettinger et al.

Summary: A four-way coupling scheme for particle-laden flows is developed and analyzed, with a focus on parameter selection and calibration. The scheme is validated through several tests of increasing physical complexity, providing a systematic methodology for future developments.

Numerical modelling of incipient motion of fracture infillings

Penghua Teng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the erosion process of infilling materials in rock fractures, predicting the initial motion of infilling particles using a coupled CFD-DEM approach and analyzing the interaction behaviors between infilling particles and fluid. The results show that the geometry of the fracture significantly affects the transport and distribution of infillings, while the erosion threshold of infilling materials can be better predicted using an equation derived from flume experiments.
