Potassium fulvic acid alleviates salt stress of citrus by regulating rhizosphere microbial community, osmotic substances and enzyme activities

Manman Zhang et al.

Summary: Salt stress damage to plants is a global concern for agriculture. The application of potassium fulvic acid (PFA) is a promising strategy to alleviate this damage and improve soil quality. This study examined the effects of PFA on citrus plants and their rhizosphere microbial community.

Temperature and Precipitation Drive Elevational Patterns of Microbial Beta Diversity in Alpine Grasslands

Xiaoqin Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of temperature and precipitation on the alpha and beta diversity of soil archaea and bacteria in alpine grasslands, discovering that temperature and precipitation had significant indirect effects on microbial richness and evenness through local environmental and energy supply-related variables, such as vegetation richness. Temperature exerted a larger direct influence on LCBD and the community composition of the microbial community.

Effect of fertilizer management on the soil bacterial community in agroecosystems across the globe

Pengfei Dang et al.

Summary: Different types of fertilizers have varying impacts on soil bacterial communities, with manure being the preferred option for maintaining belowground bacterial diversity and composition in agricultural ecosystems. Manure addition increases soil organic carbon, total soil nitrogen, and soil microbial biomass carbon compared to mineral nitrogen and straw addition, while also increasing soil pH. Soil pH is a significant factor in driving changes in bacterial alpha-diversity and community composition.

Weeds in the Alfalfa Field Decrease Rhizosphere Microbial Diversity and Association Networks in the North China Plain

Chao Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of native alfalfa and five common weed species on the soil physicochemical properties and bacterial/fungal communities in an agroecosystem. The results show that the weeds have lower plant carbon content but higher nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations compared to alfalfa. The diversity of bacterial and fungal communities in the weeds is lower, and the weeds significantly inhibit the growth of pathogenic fungi. Soil pH and phosphate concentration are identified as important factors shaping the relative abundances of bacteria and fungi. Additionally, alfalfa harbors a more complex bacterial co-occurrence network compared to the other weed species.

Effects of Organic Base Fertilizer and Inorganic Topdressing on Alfalfa Productivity and the Soil Bacterial Community in Saline Soil of the Huanghe River Delta in China

Feng He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of organic base fertilizer and inorganic topdressing on the productivity of alfalfa in saline soil. The results showed that the combined use of base and topdressing fertilizers significantly increased the productivity of alfalfa by promoting root growth. Additionally, different fertilizer treatments had different effects on the abundance of soil bacteria.

Bacterial diversity changes in response to an altitudinal gradient in arid and semi-arid regions and their effects on crops growth

Maryam Zakavi et al.

Summary: The microbiome of soil plays a crucial role in maintaining soil and plant health. This study explores the effects of elevation on the soil bacterial community and its impact on plant growth. The results show that higher altitude leads to higher diversity and lower biomass of the microbiome. Bacteria such as Bacillus cereus are abundant in arid and semi-arid samples. Interestingly, the higher diversity in higher altitudes indicates better adaptation to environmental stress. Furthermore, the inoculation of these bacteria enhances plant growth.

Disruption of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria abundance in tomato rhizosphere causes the incidence of bacterial wilt disease

Sang-Moo Lee et al.

Summary: The study showed that enrichment of protective microbiota in the rhizosphere facilitates disease suppression, while disruption of protective rhizobacteria can increase the incidence of disease. Artificial disruption of Gram-positive bacteria in rhizosphere soil resulted in higher occurrence of bacterial wilt in tomatoes. Identification of specific Gram-positive bacteria species in healthy rhizosphere soil contributed to plant immunity activation and enhanced plant disease resistance.

Niche-adaptation in plant-associated Bacteroidetes favours specialisation in organic phosphorus mineralisation

Ian D. E. A. Lidbury et al.

Summary: Bacteroidetes in the plant microbiome play a significant role in pathogen suppression and phosphorus mobilisation in the rhizosphere. Their success in this niche is attributed to their constitutive phosphatase activity, unique phosphatase PafA, and induction of specific outer membrane complexes and transporters under phosphate depletion conditions. The adaptation of Bacteroidetes to the plant microbiome has led to the acquisition of adaptive genomic signatures enhancing their phosphorus scavenging capabilities.

Impact of long-term manure and mineral fertilization on yield and nutritive value of lucerne (Medicago sativa) in relation to changes in canopy structure

Josef Hakl et al.

Summary: This long-term study showed that intensive mineral fertilization can reduce the nutritive value of lucerne forage, while manure fertilization can improve the nutritive value of leaves and stems, leading to an overall increase in whole plant nutrition.

Assessing alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) tolerance to salinity at seedling stage and screening of the salinity tolerance traits

R. Yu et al.

Summary: Salt is harmful to crop yield, with variations in salt tolerance among alfalfa cultivars. A comprehensive method was developed to evaluate alfalfa salt resistance, resulting in a mathematical equation for assessment. Key indicators for salt tolerance in alfalfa seedlings under NaCl treatment were identified.
