Diversity of Bacterial Endophytes of Maize (Zea mays) and Their Functional Potential for Micronutrient Biofortification

Summary: Microorganisms with the potential to augment iron and zinc uptake in plants were screened from maize. 129 different strains of endophytic bacteria were examined, and 24.5% were siderophore producers, 14% could solubilize insoluble zinc compounds, and 33% had phytase activity. Based on their abilities, 10 zinc solubilizers and 10 siderophore producers were selected and identified as diverse genera. The selected strains showed efficient zinc solubilization and siderophore production, indicating their potential to improve iron and zinc content in edible food crops.
