Summary: This study reviewed the pathophysiological effects of occupational physical and chemical risk factors on the reproductive system of females and males. Physical (noise, heat, and radiofrequency radiation) and chemical (such as carbamate and organophosphate pesticides, benzene, toluene, xylene, formaldehyde, NO2, CS2, manganese, lead, nickel, and n-hexane) risk factors had pathophysiological effects on the human reproductive system.

A systematic review on the association between exposure to air particulate matter during pregnancy and the development of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus

Summary: Particulate matter (PM) is considered an intrauterine toxin that can affect fetal development. This review examined the link between PM exposure during pregnancy and the development of gestational diabetes mellitus and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. A total of 27 studies were included, showing an association between PM exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the heterogeneity of baseline concentrations and inconsistent critical exposure periods need further research to identify underlying mechanisms.

Preterm birth is more common in low- and middle-income countries, especially in sub-Saharan African or South Asian countries. Low birth weight and premature birth can result in long-term consequences such as hypertension, central obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and chronic kidney disease. The reduction in nephron numbers and compensatory changes in kidney function during development contribute to the risk of chronic kidney disease in adulthood.
