Carbon Fixation and Soil Aggregation Affected by Biochar Oxidized with Hydrogen Peroxide: Considering the Efficiency of Pyrolysis Temperature

Mohammad Ghorbani et al.

Summary: Biochar, a carbon-rich material, affects carbon balance in soil. This study evaluated the changes in soil carbon storage by oxidizing biochars derived from wheat straw and wood residues, and found that the highest organic carbon concentration and carbon pool index were obtained from oxidized wheat straw biochar produced at a high temperature. Adding oxidation to biochars significantly improved the soil's aggregation indices and enhanced the structural qualities of the biochars, leading to a substantial impact on soil structure and carbon status. Wheat straw biochar was more effective than wood residue biochar, and a higher pyrolysis temperature was more effective for enhancing soil carbon pool.

Land degradation unmasked as the key constraint in sunflower (Helianthus annus) production: Role of GIS in revitalizing this vital sector

Emmanuely Z. Nungula et al.

Summary: Land degradation has been the top environmental problem in Tanzania for over 62 years, leading to an increase in poverty among rural populations. This study examines the potential role of Geographic Information System (GIS) in revitalizing sunflower production in Tanzania by addressing the issue of land degradation. The adoption of modern GIS systems is recommended to assess land suitability and implement appropriate soil management practices for sustainable and increased productivity in sunflower farming.

Effect of crop combination on yield performance, nutrient uptake, and land use advantage of cereal/legume intercropping systems

Muhammad Ali Raza et al.

Summary: Crop type and temporal dynamics have a significant impact on nutrient uptake and yield advantage in cereal/legume intercropping systems. Improved complementarity and facilitation interactions in wheat/chickpea intercropping lead to higher relative grain yields. Wheat/chickpea intercropping also has a higher efficiency in nitrogen and phosphorus uptake. The study shows that sowing legumes earlier than cereals in intercropping systems is advantageous.

Biochar mitigation of soil acidification and carbon sequestration is influenced by materials and temperature

Na Geng et al.

Summary: In this study, nine types of biochar produced from three raw materials at three pyrolysis temperatures were used to amend acidified brown soil. The application of biochar increased soil pH, reduced exchangeable acidity, exchangeable Al, and exchangeable H, alleviated oxidative stress in plants, and promoted rape growth. Biochar also enhanced microbial community diversity and reduced the mineralization rate of organic carbon. The effects of biochar depended on the pyrolysis temperature. This study clarified the best biochar materials and carbonization temperature for improving acidified soil and expanded the application range of biochar.

Comparison of long-term effects of biochar application on soil organic carbon and its fractions in two ecological sites in karst regions

Minghua Jiang et al.

Summary: This study found that long-term application of biochar (BC) significantly increased the soil organic carbon (SOC) and its fractions in karst regions, improving soil quality and carbon sequestration. The application of BC had varying effects on different ecological regions, with significant increases in SOC, readily oxidizable organic carbon (ROC), particulate organic carbon (POC), and recalcitrant carbon (RC) observed. However, there was no significant effect on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content. The increase in BC application rate also led to higher soil carbon pool indices and management indices.

Effects of Biochar Feedstock and Pyrolysis Temperature on Soil Organic Matter Mineralization and Microbial Community Structures of Forest Soils

Xiaorong Lu et al.

Summary: Biochar properties are largely determined by feedstock and pyrolysis temperature, impacting soil C sequestration and microbial communities. Biochars produced at 550 degrees C show the most significant negative priming effect, indicating higher stability in the soil. Soil microbial community structure is predominantly affected by pyrolysis temperature rather than feedstock for promoting C sequestration in the C. lanceolata plantation.
