Inflammageing and Cardiovascular System: Focus on Cardiokines and Cardiac-Specific Biomarkers

Marco Alfonso Perrone et al.

Summary: The term inflammageing was introduced in 2000 to describe the chronic inflammatory state of elderly individuals, which is characterized by elevated levels of inflammatory biomarkers, comorbidities, disability, frailty, and premature death. Inflammageing is linked to various cardiovascular diseases and early detection and counteraction of inflammageing can prevent cardiovascular disease and slow down age-related health decline. Early interventions require reliable and cost-effective biomarkers, such as cardiac-specific biomarkers, for diagnosis and further clinical studies are needed to assess their usefulness and cost/benefit ratio.

Lipoprotein(a) in Atherosclerotic Diseases: From Pathophysiology to Diagnosis and Treatment

Stamatios Lampsas et al.

Summary: Lp(a) is a cholesterol-like particle associated with apolipoprotein(a) and is a heritable risk factor for ASCVD. It plays a crucial role in inflammation, atherosclerosis, and thrombosis, but its measurement lacks a standardized method across laboratories. Standard antilipidemic therapies have limited effects on Lp(a) levels, and their impact on CV events and prognosis remains unclear.

Inflammation in coronary artery disease-clinical implications of novel HDL-cholesterol-related inflammatory parameters as predictors

Xuantong Guo et al.

Summary: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death globally, primarily due to inflammation and atherosclerotic plaques. Inflammatory cells and mediators are used to identify inflammatory risk in CAD patients. HDL-cholesterol has been shown to have anti-inflammatory roles by interfering with immune cells' plasma membrane lipid rafts. Novel inflammatory parameters, such as the monocyte to HDL-C ratio, are being explored to improve risk estimation of CAD prognosis.

Interactions between PCSK9 and NLRP3 inflammasome signaling in atherosclerosis

Yanan Wang et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is an early pathological basis of cardiovascular events resulting in death or disability. Recent studies have identified PCSK9 as a target for atherosclerosis treatment, as it degrades LDLR and acts as an inflammatory modulator. The NLRP3 inflammasome plays a key role in atherosclerotic disease, and interactions between PCSK9 and NLRP3 inflammasome contribute to inflammation-driven development and progression of atherosclerosis.

Summary: The study found that SR-BI-mediated cholesterol efflux is significantly reduced in patients with CAD, while ABCA1-mediated cholesterol efflux is similar among all groups. In CAD patients, SR-BI-mediated cholesterol efflux <25th percentile predicted cardiovascular outcomes, whereas ABCA1-mediated cholesterol efflux and HDL-C levels did not.
