GitHub repositories with links to academic papers: Public access, traceability, and evolution

Summary: This study investigates the role of academic paper references in 20,000 GitHub repositories, finding that while referencing academic papers is not common, the majority of referenced papers are publicly accessible and affiliated with academic communities. Most academic papers do not link back to any repository, but when high-tier SE conference papers do, they usually link to GitHub software repositories. The most referenced papers in a network of arXiv papers and referenced repositories are highly-cited in academia and referenced by repositories in different programming languages.
