Engineering the catalyst layers towards enhanced local oxygen transport of Low-Pt proton exchange membrane fuel cells: Materials, designs, and methods

Shiqing Liu et al.

Summary: Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are important for achieving decarbonized energy demand. However, their commercialization has been hindered by high costs. This paper focuses on reducing the amount of platinum (Pt) in PEMFCs to address the cost issue. Specifically, it summarizes various electrode design methods to optimize the local transport resistance of oxygen in the cathode catalyst layer (CCL). The insights provided in this paper offer recommendations for high-efficiency low-platinum fuel cell fabrication and design.

Superior Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) Performance Using Short-Side-Chain Perfluorosulfonic Acid (PFSA) Membrane and Ionomer

Nana Zhao et al.

Summary: Optimizing the ionomer materials in the catalyst layers is crucial for improving the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Short-side-chain PFSA polymer performs better than long-side-chain PFSA polymer, especially at high temperature and low humidity conditions. Using advanced ionomers in the catalyst layers can lead to more noticeable improvements in cell performance.

Soil-templated synthesis of mesoporous carbons from biomass wastes for ORR catalysis

Jong-Hyeok Park et al.

Summary: Biomass-derived porous carbons synthesized using a soil-templated approach showed excellent electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), attributed to the presence of doped heteroatoms induced active sites and well-defined mesoporous carbonaceous architecture. The study provides an economical and green strategy for transforming environmentally hazardous waste biomass materials into valuable ORR electrocatalysts for energy applications.

Effect of ionomer dispersions on the performance of catalyst layers in proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Jong-Hyeok Park et al.

Summary: This study extensively analyzes the effect of catalyst layer microstructure on the performance of membrane-electrode assembly in proton exchange membrane fuel cells by analyzing various ionomer dispersions. The results show that catalyst layers prepared with short side chain and propylene glycol-based ionomer dispersions have lower Ohmic loss and higher limiting current density. Additionally, an increase in the thickness of ultra-thin ionomer film is found to slightly improve the cell performance.

Editors' Choice-Ionomer Side Chain Length and Equivalent Weight Impact on High Current Density Transport Resistances in PEMFC Cathodes

Nagappan Ramaswamy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of side chain length and equivalent weight of PFSA ionomers on the transport resistances of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. It was found that decreasing EW led to higher proton conductivity and water uptake, reducing bulk-H+ and local-O-2 transport resistances in the cathode catalyst layer. A 1D-semi-empirical performance model was developed to quantify the effect of ionomer EW on cell voltage loss factors.

Determination of oxygen mass transport resistance in proton exchange membrane fuel cells with an open flow field architecture

Tatyana Reshetenko et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the applicability and validity of a novel method for determining oxygen mass transport resistance in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The method is based on measuring the limiting current when a cathode is fed with highly diluted O-2 mixtures, allowing for separation of different sources of mass transport resistance. Evaluation and comparison of different cell designs under varied conditions reveal the importance of gas phase transport and efficient oxygen diffusion through the ionomer.

Engineering Catalyst Layers for Next-Generation Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells: A Review of Design, Materials, and Methods

Theo A. M. Suter et al.

Summary: PEFCs are a promising replacement for fossil fuel-dependent automotive and energy sectors, but significant limitations on durability and performance remain. Research shows that Catalyst layer design has a significant impact on device power density and durability, but consensus is difficult to reach due to various factors. A wider understanding and research are needed in order to optimize performance, improve durability, and reduce costs.
