Zeolite-encaged palladium catalysts for heterogeneous Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions

Mingyang Gao et al.

Summary: Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction is a powerful method to construct carbon-carbon bonds and is widely used in the synthesis of functional organic compounds. In this study, zeolite-encased Pd particles (Pd@MFI) were successfully prepared and investigated as promising heterogeneous catalysts for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The Pd@MFI catalysts showed high activity, with dispersed Pd particles efficiently stabilized within the MFI zeolite matrix. The presence of basic sites adjacent to Pd sites was crucial for achieving high catalytic activity.

Chemoselective ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclopropenes spirally appended with N-aryl saturated heterocycles

Yucen Zuo et al.

Summary: The substituents on cyclopropenes and catalysts have a significant impact on the reactivity and selectivity of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). In this study, different chemoselectivities were observed when using piperidine-appended spirocyclopropenes (SCPs) and various Grubbs catalysts. The conformational difference between the piperidine and azetidine motifs plays a crucial role in determining the reactivity, selectivity, and polymerization pathway. This work provides insights into the mechanism of chemoselective ROMP of spirocyclopropenes using Grubbs catalysts and offers guidance for designing new ROMP reactions.

Graphene oxide-based dendritic adsorbent for the excellent capturing of platinum group elements

Haribandhu Chaudhuri et al.

Summary: Here, we report the development and characterization of a thermally stable graphene oxide-based dendritic adsorbent (GODA) with amino functionalization, which demonstrates the highest ever recorded sorption capacity for platinum group elements (PGEs) including platinum (Pt(IV), PtCl62-) and palladium (Pd(II), PdCl42-) from highly acidic aqueous solutions. The experimental data for Pt(IV) and Pd(II) are accurately fitted with the pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models, and Langmuir isotherm model. The material exhibits the highest reported adsorption capacities of 827.8 ± 27.7 mg/g (4.24 ± 0.00 mmol/g) for Pt(IV) and 890.7 ± 29.1 mg/g (8.37 ± 0.00 mmol/g) for Pd(II) at pH 1. The adsorption equilibriums are achieved within 70 min and 65 min for Pt(IV) and Pd(II) respectively. The binding mechanisms involve electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, cationic-pi bonding, and surface complexation between the sorbent and the sorbates. The GODA also demonstrates high thermal stability, significant acid-resistance, excellent regeneration, and reusability over five adsorption/desorption cycles for Pt(IV) and Pd(II), making it promising for practical applications.

Ultrafast organic solvent nanofiltration in C-C bonded conjugated microporous membrane-based nanochannels by space-confined polymerization

Summary: Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) is a low energy consumption and environmentally-friendly membrane technology. However, current commercial ultrafiltration membranes are not suitable for OSN due to their low retention and poor solvent resistance. In this study, a solvent-resistant CCMP@PTFE composite membrane was prepared by incorporating CCMP into PTFE ultrafiltration membrane through space-confined polymerization. The resulting CCMP@PTFE membranes exhibit excellent separation performance, solvent resistance, and flexibility, rivaling the best reported membranes. This strategy provides inspiration for the design of high-performance OSN membranes.

Operando characterization of rhodium catalyst degradation in hydroformylation

Martin Gerlach et al.

Summary: In addition to activity and selectivity, understanding the deactivation processes is essential for a comprehensive understanding of catalyst stability. This study explores catalyst deactivation in the hydroformylation reaction using Rh/BiPhePhos catalyst and hydroperoxides. By investigating the structural changes of the catalyst with operando FTIR spectroscopy and kinetic perturbation experiments, the loss of regioselectivity in the hydroformylation reaction is correlated with the degradation of the catalyst. The developed kinetic model predicts the critical degradation of the ligand and provides a model-based approach for process stabilization and optimization.
