Growing ZIF-8 Seeds on Charged COF Substrates toward Efficient Propylene-Propane Separation Membranes

Yunchuan Pu et al.

Summary: We demonstrate a COF-induced seeding strategy for fabricating MOF membranes, using COF substrate with uniform pore size and abundant functional groups. Charged COF nanosheets were designed to induce the formation of high aspect ratio ZIF-8@COF nanosheet seeds, which could be processed into a compact and uniform seed layer. The resulting ZIF-8 membranes exhibit ultrahigh C3H6/C3H8 separation performance and excellent long-term stability, and this strategy is also applicable to ultrathin ZIF-67 and UiO-66 membranes.

Effect of Activation Process on the Performance of ZIF-8 Membrane for Propylene/Propane Separation

Qiang Ma et al.

Summary: Fine-tuning the interior structure of porous materials is crucial for altering gas transport characteristics. Activation-induced structure manipulation on ZIF-8 membranes increases the amount of embedded DMAc molecules, enhancing the thermodynamic adsorption selectivity for C3H6/C3H8 and improving the separation ability of the membranes. The activated ZIF-8 membranes show different permeance and separation factors for C3H6/C3H8 after treatment with methanol, acetonitrile, and chloroform.

Jianyu Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, an inhibited Ostwald ripening (IOR) strategy is proposed to fabricate ultrathin ZIF-8 membranes. The IOR process is achieved by incorporating polymer-based inhibitors into the membrane formula to inhibit the growth process of ZIF-8 crystals. The thickness of ZIF-8 membranes can be dramatically reduced to 180 nm using this strategy, while exhibiting excellent C3H6/C3H8 separation performance.
