Chromium in Water and Carcinogenic Human Health Risk

Maria-Nefeli Georgaki et al.

Summary: Understanding the extent of human health risks from potentially toxic chemicals, particularly carcinogens such as hexavalent chromium in drinking water, is crucial for effective prevention and mitigation. A systematic review of scientific literature was performed to assess the carcinogenic human health risk due to exposure to total or hexavalent chromium. The review included epidemiological studies and case studies, indicating credible evidence that hexavalent chromium in water is a major contributor to cancer burden globally. However, limitations in dose and duration of exposure data in the target population highlight the need for further research.

New Insights on the Effects of Water on Polymer Inclusion Membranes Containing Aliquat 336 Derivatives as Carriers

Claudia Fontas et al.

Summary: Surface characterization of polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) containing different ionic liquids (ILs) was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The study investigated the effect of water on the membrane's morphology and composition. The results showed that immersion in ultrapure water caused changes in the surface composition of the PIMs, which may affect the reactivity of the membrane. Additionally, it was found that AlqCl was the most effective IL for arsenic (V) transport in the PIMs.

Polymer inclusion membrane applications for transport of metal ions: A critical review

Basak Keskin et al.

Summary: The co-existence of heavy metals in industrial effluents is a prevalent problem that poses a threat to the environment and human health. Traditional methods for metal treatment have disadvantages, leading to the development of new processes such as polymer inclusion membranes with higher metal ion transport performance in the past 20 years.
