Oranso T. Mahlangu et al.

Summary: This work critically reviews the application of various membrane separation processes in treating water polluted with trace organic compounds, paying attention to the mechanisms of rejection and the challenges in fouling and scaling. It also explores the potential of using renewable energy sources to drive energy intensive membrane separation processes.

Nanoparticle-Enhanced PVDF Flat-Sheet Membranes for Seawater Desalination in Direct Contact Membrane Distillation

Indira Chimanlal et al.

Summary: Hydrophobic functionalized carbon nanotubes (fCNTs) and silica nanoparticles (fSiO(2)NPs) were added to polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) flat-sheet membranes to improve their performance in membrane distillation (MD). The incorporation of fCNTS and fSiO(2)NPs improved the water contact angle (WCA) and liquid entry pressure (LEP) of the PVDF membrane, as well as the membrane surface roughness. This resulted in high salt rejection and stable fluxes in the MD process.

A facile synthesis approach for GO-ZnO/PES ultrafiltration mixed matrix photocatalytic membranes for dye removal in water: Leveraging the synergy between photocatalysis and membrane filtration

Oranso T. Mahlangu et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide-zinc oxide (GO-ZnO) nanocomposite photocatalytic membranes were fabricated using a novel double casting phase inversion method. The incorporation of GO-ZnO improved the hydrophilicity of the membranes, while the addition of PVP increased the pure water flux. Conversely, increasing GO-ZnO concentration improved the rejection of salt and drugs. Furthermore, the GO-ZnO/PVP membrane displayed the highest photocatalytic degradation performance. Overall, this work demonstrates the potential to improve both membrane filtration and photocatalytic properties through tailored membrane synthesis.

Beta cyclodextrin modified polyvinylidene fluoride adsorptive mixed matrix membranes for removal of Congo red

Lloyd N. Ndlovu et al.

Summary: This study reports the adsorptive removal of congo red from wastewater using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes modified with beta cyclodextrin (beta-CD). The results showed that the introduction of beta-CD improved the membrane performance, adsorption, and filtration properties. The study investigated the effect of pH, dye initial concentration, adsorbent dosage, and contact time on the adsorption efficiency. Filtration experiments demonstrated a dye removal efficiency of 77.28%. The uniqueness of this work lies in the mechanistic characteristics of the PVDF/beta-CD membranes in the removal of congo red.

In Situ Generation of Fouling Resistant Ag/Pd Modified PES Membranes for Treatment of Pharmaceutical Wastewater

Rapelang Patala et al.

Summary: In this study, Ag and Pd bimetallic nanoparticles were generated in PES dope solutions and fabricated into membranes. The addition of Ag/Pd nanoparticles increased the roughness and hydrophilicity of the membranes, resulting in improved pure water permeability and antifouling properties. The membranes showed potential for the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater.

Emerging organic compounds in European groundwater

S. Y. Bunting et al.

Summary: The emergence of organic compounds in European groundwater is a growing area of research. Despite the formalisation of a voluntary groundwater watch list, there has been no systematic review of groundwater occurrence data in Europe. The aim in Europe is to develop a unified strategy for the classification and prioritisation of organic compounds to be monitored in groundwater.

Interdependence of Contributing Factors Governing Dead-End Fouling of Nanofiltration Membranes

Oranso Themba Mahlangu et al.

Summary: An unfamiliar approach was used to investigate the role of cake-enhanced concentration polarization (CECP) effects in fouling a nanofiltration membrane that poorly rejects salts. The affinity between foulants and membrane surfaces increased as pore blocking was not significant, with hydraulic resistance due to cake formation having a greater impact on flux decline than CECP effects.

Leaching of CuO Nanoparticles from PES Ultrafiltration Membranes

Alfred Kajau et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that prolonged exposure of PES membranes incorporated with CuO nanoparticles to different cleaning solutions can lead to nanoparticle leaching, affecting membrane properties; cleaning solutions degrade the membrane polymers, but the impact is less pronounced compared to the combined leaching of nanoparticles.
