Evaluation of Forward Osmosis and Low-Pressure Reverse Osmosis with a Tubular Membrane for the Concentration of Municipal Wastewater and the Production of Biogas

Monica Salamanca et al.

Summary: Freshwater scarcity is a major issue faced by the world population, prompting the development of new wastewater treatment technologies such as membrane processes. This study evaluates and compares the performance of a tubular membrane TFO-D90 in forward osmosis (FO) and low-pressure reverse osmosis (LPRO) operating modes when treating municipal wastewater. Parameters such as fouling, flow rates, water flux, draw solution concentration, organic matter concentration, and recovery are studied. The results indicate that while the membrane can work in both processes, FO is considered more suitable due to its lower fouling level and better energy and productivity performance.

A Sequential Membrane Process of Ultrafiltration Forward Osmosis and Reverse Osmosis for Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater Treatment and Reuse

Faryal Fatima et al.

Summary: To address the challenges of food security and sustainability in the poultry processing industry, a sequential membrane process of UF, FO, and RO is proposed for the treatment of semi-processed poultry slaughterhouse wastewater (PSWW). The process showed excellent performance in pollutant removal and water recovery, with UF and FO modes achieving high rejection efficiency for COD, TP, TS, TVS, TFS, and TN. The performance of the FO membrane was restored by flushing with a sodium dodecyl sulfate solution. RO further removed COD, TS, TVS, TFS, and TP, although the reduction of TN was limited by the high ammonia concentration in the draw solution.

Advantages and Limitations of Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment-Technological Basics, Development Directions, and Technological Innovations

Marcin Zielinski et al.

Summary: Anaerobic wastewater treatment is an effective technology for degrading organic compounds and producing biogas. It has numerous advantages over aerobic methods, including high organic load rate operation, less production of difficult-to-manage sewage sludge, smaller space requirements, and high methane biogas production. It also aligns with the circular economy concept, reducing CO2 emissions and energy consumption while producing renewable energy.

Comprehensive assessment of the effects of operating conditions on membrane intrinsic parameters of forward osmosis (FO) based on principal component analysis (PCA)

Min-kyu Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that water and salt permeabilities of the FO membrane are not purely intrinsic parameters, as they are significantly influenced by the membrane material and operating conditions. Principal component analysis revealed that osmotic pressure, temperature, and flow velocity are the main operating variables affecting FO performance. Contrary to common knowledge, the study confirmed the importance of flow velocity in addition to osmotic pressure and temperature in FO systems.

Critical review on negative emerging contaminant removal efficiency of wastewater treatment systems: Concept, consistency and consequences

Manish Kumar et al.

Summary: Emerging contaminants (ECs) cannot be completely removed by wastewater treatment due to their ability to form complexes, toxic derivatives, byproducts, and to dynamically partition. Negative contaminant removal, i.e., higher concentrations (up to 5731%) of these ECs in the effluent compared to the influent, is globally widespread in almost all types of treatment systems. Conventional WWTPs show the highest negative removal (NR) for Carbamazepine and Carbadox. NR efficiencies are influenced by conjugation-deconjugation, types of WWTPs, transformations, leaching, operational parameters, sampling schemes, and the nature of the substances. Pesticides and beta-blockers exhibit the highest percentage of NR among various categories of micropollutants, posing a threat to human health and the environment. With beta-blockers showing >200% NR, low blood-pressure related symptoms may become more prevalent in the near future. This study highlights the phenomenon of negative removal that requires urgent attention.

Biogas Production from Concentrated Municipal Sewage by Forward Osmosis, Micro and Ultrafiltration

Summary: Direct application of anaerobic digestion to sewage treatment is limited to tropical weather conditions due to its diluted nature and unsuitable temperatures. Changing the temperature or concentration, or both, would require more energy than is available in the organic matter. Therefore, a feasible alternative is the use of a pre-concentration step, such as membrane filtration, to enable direct anaerobic conversion of organic matter.

Occurrence, Distribution, and Risk Assessment of Antibiotics in the Aquatic Environment of the Karst Plateau Wetland of Yangtze River Basin, Southwestern China

Feng Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of commonly used antibiotics in the aquatic environment of the Caohai wetland in southwestern China. The results show that fluoroquinolones and macrolides were the most predominant categories, and ciprofloxacin, oxytetracycline, acetyl sulfamethoxazole, norfloxacin, and florfenicol were the most commonly detected antibiotics. Human activities have a significant impact on the spatial distribution of antibiotics, but the wetland also has natural purification potential. Contamination in the surrounding wetland primarily comes from domestic sewage and wastewater from agriculture and animal husbandry. The study also suggests that the risk posed by mixtures of antibiotics is higher than that posed by individual antibiotics.
