Effect of Measurement System Configuration and Operating Conditions on 2D Material-Based Gas Sensor Sensitivity

Jongwon Ryu et al.

Summary: Gas sensors applied in real-time detection require a reliable test platform to evaluate their characteristics. This study investigates the effect of measurement conditions and system configurations on the sensitivity of 2D material-based gas sensors. The results show that the distance between the gas inlet and the sensor and the gas inlet orientation influence the sensor performance, with a decrease in distance leading to improved sensitivity and a perpendicular gas inlet orientation achieving maximum sensitivity.

Humidity-independent electronic nose of ?-Fe2O3/ZnFe2O4 heterojunctions for trace detection of N-butanol exhalation in lung cancer screening

Wenqian Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, humidity-independent alpha-Fe2O3/ZnFe2O4 (FZFO) hetero-junctions with strong magnetism were prepared for N-butanol gas detection, potentially serving as electronic noses for early lung cancer screening. The magnetism of FZFO allows for more oxygen capture and redox, while the n-n heterojunctions greatly enhance gas sensitivity, even responding to 0.1 ppm at 160 degrees Celsius. The FZFO-4 sample has a detection limit of 1 ppb, meeting accuracy requirements, and both FZFO-2 and FZFO-4 samples maintain humidity independence at 91% relative humidity, minimizing the influence of water vapor exhaled by patients. This work introduces FZFO heterojunctions as electronic noses for lung cancer screening, potentially revolutionizing non-invasive diagnosis.

Summary: Diagnosing lung diseases is challenging, but exhaled breath analysis using an electronic nose can improve sensitivity and accuracy. Commercial electronic noses have shown promising results in preliminary studies. However, there are limitations in directly sampling exhaled breath due to the impact of flow and temperature on MOS sensor response. To address this, a new electronic nose test system that controls these variables was proposed. Computational fluid dynamics analysis and direct velocity measurements were conducted to confirm the uniformity of flow and gas distribution in the sensor chamber.
