Use and Awareness of Heated Tobacco Products in Europe

Silvano Gallus et al.

Summary: HTP use was limited among the general population in Europe, but the dual use of these products, high use among younger generations, and interest of non-smokers are concerning and require close monitoring.

Insight into the pulmonary molecular toxicity of heated tobacco products using human bronchial and alveolar mucosa models at air-liquid interface

Mizanur Rahman et al.

Summary: A study on the toxicological response of heated tobacco products (HTP) found that exposure to HTP-smoke led to accumulation of reactive oxygen species, nuclear factors, and DNA damage in bronchial and alveolar models. RNA sequencing revealed differential regulation of genes in both models following HTP-smoke exposure. Pathways related to estrogen biosynthesis, ferroptosis, and degradation of superoxide radicals, xenobiotics, and alpha-tocopherol were found to be enriched. These findings provide a basis for further risk assessment studies on different flavors of HTP.

Summary: This study demonstrates that COPD patients who switch to heated tobacco products experience significant improvements in respiratory symptoms, exercise tolerance, quality of life, and rate of disease exacerbations over a 3-year period, while no significant changes were observed in patients who continued smoking.

Acute Effects of Heated Tobacco Product (IQOS) Aerosol Inhalation on Lung Tissue Damage and Inflammatory Changes in the Lungs

Tariq A. Bhat et al.

Summary: The study found that short-term inhalation of aerosols from IQOS resulted in lung damage and proinflammatory changes similar to those caused by exposure to cigarette smoke. Both IQOS and CS exposure led to lung inflammation and immune cell infiltration, significantly higher than air-exposed controls.

Prevalence and reasons for use of Heated Tobacco Products (HTP) in Europe: an analysis of Eurobarometer data in 28 countries

Anthony A. Laverty et al.

Summary: A significant number of people in the EU have ever used HTP, but current and daily use remains low. Current use is more common among younger people and smokers, with reasons including the perception that HTP are less harmful than smoking, use by friends, and smoking cessation or reduction.
