Charge-specific adverse effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on zebrafish (Danio rerio) development and behavior

Miaomiao Teng et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics, especially positively charged ones, have demonstrated neurotoxicity in fish, leading to developmental and behavioral impairments. The presence of differently charged nanoplastics in the brain and gastrointestinal tract of zebrafish was observed, with positively charged nanoplastics showing stronger toxicity and apoptosis in the brain, as well as greater neurobehavioral impairment. The specific interaction between positively charged nanoplastics and the NMDA2B neurotransmitter receptor contributes to these behavioral variations.

Polystyrene nanoplastics penetrate across the blood-brain barrier and induce activation of microglia in the brain of mice

Shan Shan et al.

Summary: The study found that 50 nm polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) could pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and accumulate in the brains of mice, leading to activation of microglia and damage to neurons. In vitro studies also showed that PS-NPs could be internalized by cells and caused the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), activation of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-kappa B), secretion of tumor necrosis factors alpha (TNF-alpha), and cell death.

Identification of ceRNA network to explain the mechanism of cognitive dysfunctions induced by PS NPs in mice

Chen Chu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the neurotoxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs) in mice and its underlying mechanisms. The results demonstrated that exposure to PS NPs induced cognitive decline and increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and DNA damage in mice. Gene expression analysis revealed significant alterations in synaptic function-related genes upon PS NPs exposure. A competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network was constructed, providing insights into the molecular events associated with nanoplastic toxicity and cognitive dysfunction.

Polystyrene micro- and nano-particle coexposure injures fetal thalamus by inducing ROS-mediated cell apoptosis

Diqi Yang et al.

Summary: The potential toxicity of plastic particles to fetuses was investigated in this study by orally administering polystyrene particles to pregnant mice. The particles were found to distribute in the digestive tract, brain, uterus, and placenta of maternal mice, and to infiltrate the fetal thalamus. Maternal exposure to these particles resulted in anxiety-like behavior and reduced GABA synthesis in the brains of the progenies. Antioxidant treatment alleviated the oxidative damage caused by the particles and rescued the anxiety-like behavior. The study highlights the negative effects of plastic particles on fetuses and their potential health risks.

Integrative mRNA and Long Noncoding RNA Analysis Reveals the Regulatory Network of Floral Bud Induction in Longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour.)

Fan Liang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the molecular mechanisms of floral induction in longan using transcriptome sequencing. The results showed the significance of starch and sucrose metabolic, circadian rhythms, and plant hormone signal transduction pathways in floral induction. The analysis of weighted gene co-expression network and expression pattern provided insights into the specific transcriptional characteristics and co-expressed gene regulatory network during floral induction. Key DEmRNAs and DElncRNAs were identified. A hypothetical model of regulatory pathways and key genes and lncRNAs during floral bud induction in longan was proposed.

Micro- and nanoplastic induced cellular toxicity in mammals: A review

Amrita Banerjee et al.

Summary: Plastic-based products are widely used in daily life but their limited biodegradability has raised pollution concerns globally, particularly micro- and nanoplastics. These pollutants are widespread in various environments and have well-documented biological effects on aquatic organisms, while their impacts on mammals remain insufficiently studied. Small size, positive charge, high dose, and presence of toxic additives or pollutants in micro/nanoplastics appear to induce cellular toxicity through oxidative stress, membrane damage, immune response, and genotoxicity.

MiRNA-199a-5p targets WNT2 to regulate depression through the CREB/BDNF signaling in hippocampal neuron

Zheng Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that miR-199a-5p expression levels were significantly increased in the cerebrospinal fluids and serums of depression patients as well as in the hippocampus of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mice. However, the expressions of WNT2, p-CREB, and BDNF were inhibited. In addition, the miR-199a-5p inhibitor enhanced certain behaviors associated with depression in CUMS mice, and this effect was attenuated by knockdown of WNT2.
