Effects of soil drought and nitrogen deposition on BVOC emissions and their O3 and SOA formation for Pinus thunbergii

Weizhen Yang et al.

Summary: Soil drought and nitrogen deposition have effects on the emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), ozone (O3), and secondary organic aerosols (SOA). Laboratory simulation experiments were conducted to investigate their individual and combined effects on Pinus thunbergii's BVOC emissions. The results showed that light drought stimulated BVOC emissions, while moderate and severe drought inhibited emissions. Nitrogen deposition decreased other VOC emissions and increased isoprene and sesquiterpene emissions. Under combined treatment, BVOC emissions were generally inhibited, except for sesquiterpene and isoprene in certain conditions.

Optimization of a NOx and VOC Cooperative Control Strategy Based on Clean Air Benefits

Dian Ding et al.

Summary: The serious ambient PM2.5 and O-3 pollution in China requires urgent and cost-effective control strategies. This study highlights the importance of reducing NOx emissions and synergistic VOC control for significant human health and crop production benefits. It also emphasizes the need for simultaneous VOC and NOx emission control in different seasons to combat PM2.5 and O-3 pollution effectively.

Effects of methyl halide flux characteristics following Spartina alterniflora invasion in a seaward direction in a temperate salt marsh, China br

Wenchao Ding et al.

Summary: This study explores the source-sink characteristics of methyl halide (CH3X) in temperate coastal wetlands and identifies key factors affecting the variation of CH3X during the invasion of Spartina alterniflora. The results show that CH3X emissions exhibit seasonal and diurnal variations. S. alterniflora acts as a source of CH3X, with higher fluxes in the spring and autumn seasons. On the other hand, the bare flat area functions as a sink for CH3X, with maximum absorption flux occurring in summer. The biomass of S. alterniflora, particularly the leaves, significantly influences CH3X fluxes.

Contributions of meteorology and anthropoaenic emissions to the trends in winter PM2.5 in eastern China 2013-2018

Yanxing Wu et al.

Summary: Multiple linear regression models are used to assess the contributions of meteorology/climate and anthropogenic emission control to linear trends of PM2.5 concentration in three regions in eastern China. The results indicate that the quantitative contributions derived from MLR alone are not credible, and there is a significant difference between short-term and long-term analyses. Long-term analysis provides a more precise assessment due to additional constraints from long-term data.

Enhanced summertime ozone and SOA from biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions due to vegetation biomass variability during 1981-2018 in China

Jing Cao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that BVOC emissions have distinct impacts on O-3 and SOA concentrations, with isoprene contributing the most to O-3 and monoterpenes having the largest effect on SOA production. Different regions showed varying trends in O-3 and SOA interannual variations due to changes in leaf biomass and vegetation types.

A comprehensive review on anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission estimates in China: Comparison and outlook

Bowei Li et al.

Summary: Accurate measurement and estimation of VOCs emissions in China are crucial for effective pollution control measures. This study reviewed two estimation methods and found that emissions have been increasing since 1949. Industrial and solvent use contributions to VOCs emissions are increasing, while transportation sector contributions are decreasing since 2000. Spatially, hotspots of emissions are concentrated in eastern China.

Review on plant terpenoid emissions worldwide and in China

Weizhen Yang et al.

Summary: Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), especially terpenoids, play a significant role in ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation in the atmosphere, as well as global climate change. Understanding their emission mechanisms and measurements is crucial for evaluating their impact on atmospheric chemistry and climate change. Further research is needed to quantify the effects of environmental factors on terpenoid emissions, especially in China where accurate local measurements are essential for improving emission inventories.

Sesquiterpenes and oxygenated sesquiterpenes dominate the VOC (C5-C20) emissions of downy birches

Heidi Hellen et al.

Summary: The emissions of terpenes, oxygenated terpenes, and green leaf volatiles from downy birch leaves were quantified, with sesquiterpenes and oxygenated sesquiterpenes identified as the main emitted compounds. These emissions were significantly higher in the early growing season compared to the main and late periods. Over the whole growing season, the total monoterpene emissions were only a fraction of the total sesquiterpene and oxygenated sesquiterpene emissions. It was also found that the emissions from stressed trees could have a strong impact on atmospheric chemistry, especially on secondary organic aerosol production.

A long-term estimation of biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emission in China from 2001-2016: the roles of land cover change and climate variability

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: Over the past 20 years, China has been leading the global greening trend, resulting in a nationwide increase in BVOC emissions. Land cover changes due to greening have been the main driver of BVOC emission changes in China, with climate variability contributing significantly to interannual variations but not as much to the overall changing trend.
