Exposure to pesticide components causes recurrent pregnancy loss by increasing placental oxidative stress and apoptosis: a case-control study

Mona A. H. El-Baz et al.

Summary: We investigated the plasma levels of pesticides in cases of recurrent pregnancy loss and found that they were significantly higher in RPL cases compared to normal pregnancies. These pesticide levels were associated with increased placental oxidative stress and apoptosis, and decreased plasma HCG levels. The findings suggest that pesticides may be risk factors in cases of spontaneous RPL. Measures should be taken to reduce maternal exposure to these pollutants, especially in underdeveloped and developing countries.

The correlation between chronic exposure to particulate matter and spontaneous abortion: A meta-analysis

Wentao Zhu et al.

Summary: This study conducted an evidence-based meta-analysis on the possible linkage between chronic particulate matter (PM) exposure and risks of spontaneous abortion (SAB). The results showed a significant increase in SAB hazards related to maternal PM exposure, with both fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and particulate matter <= 10 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) being categorized as moderate certainty evidence by the GRADE results. This study may provide new evidence for personal protection to improve reproductive health.

Assessment of pesticide use and pesticide residues in vegetables from two provinces in Central Vietnam

Chau Nguyen Dang Giang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates pesticide use and residue in vegetables in two provinces in Central Vietnam and discusses the potential health risks associated with pesticide contamination. The findings show a high detection rate of pesticide residues in vegetable samples, with some exceeding the maximum residue limit values. Residue levels vary among different vegetables and seasons. The study also identifies a potential health risk and provides recommendations for mitigating the risks associated with pesticide use in vegetables.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in the Environment: Occupational and Exposure Events, Effects on Human Health and Fertility

Luigi Montano et al.

Summary: In the last decade, there has been renewed attention in the scientific community on the presence and potential risks of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) due to their continued presence in the environment and workplaces. PCBs primarily enter the human body through ingestion of contaminated foods, followed by inhalation and dermal contact. These pollutants are found in building materials and electrical equipment, with the highest contamination levels in e-waste recycling sites. Studies have reported environmental and occupational exposure to PCBs, with workers showing increased blood PCB concentrations. Epidemiological studies suggest that high concentrations of PCBs are associated with various health outcomes including neuropsychological deficits, dementia, immune system dysfunctions, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. PCBs bioaccumulation also affects fertility and reproductive systems. Further research is needed to understand the effects of low-level PCBs exposure in workplaces and specific indoor environments.

Associations between internal concentrations of fluorinated and organochlorinated chemicals in women and in vitro fertilization outcomes: A multi-pollutant study

Tiphaine Lefebvre et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of persistent organic pollutants on in vitro fertilization (IVF) in women. The results showed that most pollutants were widely present in women but not significantly associated with clinically relevant IVF outcomes. However, PCB138 and trans-nonachlor were negatively associated with usable blastocysts, while PCB28 showed positive associations with the number of usable blastocysts, pregnancy rate, and live birth rate.

Effectiveness of Different Washing Strategies on Pesticide Residue Removal: The First Comparative Study on Leafy Vegetables

So-Jin Yang et al.

Summary: Leafy vegetables, due to their inability to be peeled and their large leaf surface area, present a higher risk of retaining pesticide residues compared to other vegetables. This study is the first comparative study to investigate the effectiveness of different removal methods for pesticide residues on five leafy vegetables. The results highlight the importance of thoroughly washing leafy vegetables to reduce the intake of pesticide residues.

Exposure to pesticides in utero impacts the fetal immune system and response to vaccination in infancy

Mary Prahl et al.

Summary: Research has shown that exposure to bendiocarb during pregnancy can be detected at high levels in the bodies of women and their infants, leading to various changes in the fetal immune system, including a decrease in regulatory T cells and inhibition of antigen-driven proliferation. Additionally, bendiocarb exposure may affect the immune response of infants to measles vaccination.

Cytogenetic Analysis of the Products of Conception After Spontaneous Abortion in the First Trimester

Xueluo Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, 340 patients who experienced spontaneous abortions were retrospectively recruited to investigate chromosomal abnormalities of conception products in the first trimester. Results showed that chromosomal abnormality incidence was related to age and number of spontaneous abortions, with aneuploidy being the most common abnormality. The study also found that the rates of abnormality for certain chromosomes varied with age, while chromosomal abnormalities differed across age subgroups.

Effects of Polychlorinated Biphenyls on Animal Reproductive Systems and Epigenetic Modifications

Qi-Long He et al.

Summary: PCBs are highly toxic endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can have profound and long-lasting effects on animals. The accumulation of PCBs in animal tissues and body fluids through biomagnification can lead to decreased fertility, interference with endocrine processes, and the development of various diseases, including cancer. The effects of PCBs on reproductive systems can be passed on to offspring, suggesting potential epigenetic modifications.
