Ecotoxicological Assessment of Polluted Soils One Year after the Application of Different Soil Remediation Techniques

Mario Paniagua-Lopez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of eight different soil remediation techniques using residual materials (gypsum, marble, vermicompost) on reducing the toxicity of metal(loid)s (Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Cd) in a contaminated natural area. These remediation treatments were applied in field conditions and assessed after one year. Ecotoxicological tests using different organisms were conducted on the solid or aqueous fraction of the amended soils. Soil properties and metal fractions were analyzed to assess their influence on soil toxicity. The results showed that the choice of fraction (solid or aqueous) influenced the response of organisms to the treatments. The combination of metal availability and ecotoxicological response is crucial for selecting effective remediation techniques under natural conditions. Among the treatments tested, the addition of marble sludge with vermicompost was the most effective in reducing metal(loid)s toxicity.

Remediation potential of mining, agro-industrial, and urban wastes against acid mine drainage

Antonio Aguilar-Garrido et al.

Summary: Acid mine drainage (AMD) has serious impacts on human health and ecosystems. This study evaluates the remediation potential of wastes from urban, mining, and agro-industrial activities for addressing acidity and high concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTE) in AMD. The results show that these wastes have a high capacity to neutralize acidity and immobilize PTE, suggesting their potential use in AMD treatment.

A Green Solution for the Rehabilitation of Marginal Lands: The Case of Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet Grown in Technosols

Antonio Aguilar-Garrido et al.

Summary: Reclamation of abandoned mining areas using integrated biotechnology and the Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet, a drought-resistant legume, can address waste mismanagement, environmental contamination, and growing food demand. Two Technosols were prepared by combining gossan waste (GW) from an abandoned mining area with low-cost organic and inorganic materials. The Technosols improved soil conditions, reduced the bioavailability of potentially hazardous elements (except As) in GW, and allowed Lablab to thrive with safe levels of PHE accumulation in the shoots for animal consumption. This integrated biotechnology approach shows potential for converting marginal lands into food-production areas.

Application of Biochar for the Restoration of Metal(loid)s Contaminated Soils

Marta Graziano et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the use of biochar from plant pruning as an amendment for immobilizing metal(loid)s in contaminated soil and reducing phytotoxicity. The results show that biochar increases soil pH, reduces soluble and bioavailable forms of Zn and Cu, and decreases phytotoxicity, promoting seed germination and biomass. The potential of biochar for bioremediation under field conditions is suggested.

Distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) and their roles in plant growth: A review

Yue Tao et al.

Summary: The increasing use of rare earth elements in industries has led to their discharge into the environment, making them important emerging pollutants. This article summarizes the distribution and occurrence of rare earth elements in soil and water, and explores their impact on plants and the potential mechanisms involved. Additionally, insights into the activation of endocytosis in plants by rare earth elements are provided.

Ecotoxicological risk assessment in soils contaminated by Pb and As 20 years after a mining spill

R. Pastor-Jauregui et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential toxicity of soils in the Guadiamar Green Corridor affected by a major mining accident in Spain. The results show that even after 20 years, residual contamination and increasing bioavailability of certain contaminants still pose risks to soil and organisms. However, the overall human health risk is considered low based on hazard quotient evaluation.

Mineral import demand and clean energy transitions in the top mineral-importing countries

Md Monirul Islam et al.

Summary: The clean energy transitions lead to increased demand for minerals, causing a rise in critical mineral prices. Top mineral importing countries show a significantly positive response in mineral import demand to solar and wind energy production. The oil price has limited substitution effect on mineral import demand, while depreciation of exchange rate reduces mineral import demands.

Early pedogenesis of anthropogenic soils produced by the world's largest mining disaster, the Funda tilde o dam collapse, in southeast Brazil

Hermano Melo Queiroz et al.

Summary: The production of waste by mining companies poses a complex environmental challenge, and constructing Technosols from mining waste could be a viable solution. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the soil formation processes that govern the functioning of these Technosols. This study analyzed the pedogenic processes in Technosols formed unintentionally from Fe-rich tailings deposited in a river estuary after a mining disaster, providing valuable insights into the factors influencing Technosol formation and functioning.

Summary: Sustainable metal supply requires coordinated strategy and policy. Global demand for major metals is projected to increase continuously, but current extraction and processing scenarios lack explicit linkages to Earth's carrying capacity. Opportunities across entire life cycles of metal resources need more attention.

Responses of Soil Organic Carbon Mineralization and Microbial Communities to Leaf Litter Addition under Different Soil Layers

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that adding pine and mixed litter increased the decomposition rates of soil organic matter in deep soil, while adding acacia litter had a stronger priming effect, especially in deep soil. The results suggest that adding broadleaf litter to coniferous plantations may enhance deep soil carbon stocks.

Rocio Soria et al.

Summary: The study focused on the short and medium-term effects of organic amendments from a limestone quarry in SE Spain on the restoration of degraded soils in semiarid regions. It found that organic amendments significantly improved soil properties, with vegetable compost from garden waste or horticultural greenhouse crop residues being the most effective restoration treatments in terms of soil quality, CO2 emissions, and plant survival rates.
