Legumes or Meat? The Effectiveness of Recommendation Messages towards a Plant-Based Diet Depends on People's Identification with Flexitarians

Valentina Carfora et al.

Summary: In this study, we examined how to promote a plant-based diet through a 2-week mobile app intervention involving 428 volunteers. We compared messages that encouraged adding legumes to the diet versus messages that promoted replacing meat with legumes. These messages were also assessed with and without dynamic norms. We found that in the short term, adding legume messages increased consumption more than replacement messages, especially among those with negative views of flexitarians and low identification with them. In the long term, increased legume consumption was only recorded when addition messages were combined with dynamic norms. For meat consumption, replacement messages were more effective in reducing it in the short term, especially among those with positive attitudes towards flexitarians. However, replacement messages combined with dynamic norms were more effective in the long term. These findings contribute to our understanding of tailoring dietary messages.

Changing Food Patterns during the Pandemic: Exploring the Role of Household Dynamics and Income Stabilization Strategies

Tao Lian et al.

Summary: COVID-19 pandemic has led to a decrease in food consumption, especially for pork, and a decrease in food diversity, particularly for households whose income is affected. Self-production methods such as kitchen gardening can help households maintain and improve their food consumption during the pandemic. Farmers are less likely to suffer worsened food consumption compared to self-employed and wage workers.

Predicting and promoting the consumption of plant-based meat

Valentina Carfora et al.

Summary: The present research aimed to predict and promote plant-based meat consumption, by investigating the psychosocial antecedents of consumption intentions and testing the effectiveness of different environmental messages. The findings showed that a positive attitude towards eating plant-based meat and awareness of the environmental consequences of meat production were key factors influencing consumption intentions. Furthermore, different messages were found to have varying effects on non-consumers and consumers of plant-based meat.

The psychosocial antecedents of the adherence to the Mediterranean diet

Valentina Carfora et al.

Summary: This study tested an integrated theoretical model to explain the role of different psychosocial factors in increasing the intention to adhere to the Mediterranean Diet. Findings revealed that perceived behavioral control was the strongest rational antecedent of intention, followed by emotional and social antecedents, while motivational antecedents had only an indirect impact on intention via emotional antecedents. Additionally, past adherence to the MeDiet moderated the relationships among all study variables.

Valentina Carfora et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the effectiveness of recommendation messages in promoting the purchase of local food. The results showed that different message frames increased the selection of local food. In addition, messages formulated in terms of gains and non-losses were more persuasive to pro-environmental consumers, while messages formulated in terms of losses or non-losses were more persuasive to healthy consumers.

Consumers' eating habits during the Covid-19 pandemic: Evidence of an experimental analysis in Italy

Filippo Sgroi et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Italian food supply chain effectively addressed the needs and anxieties of consumers, ensuring continuous food supply even during the lockdown. As the situation improved, people returned to normalcy and relied on the efficient logistics of the food supply chain. However, in rural areas, the pandemic led to a preference for local agricultural products due to the availability of more time and a return to self-sustainable practices.

Consumer Perceptions about the Value of Short Food Supply Chains during COVID-19: Atlantic Canada Perspective

Melissa Maas et al.

Summary: The recent COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted weaknesses in the global food system, impacting short food supply chains (SFSCs) and long food supply chains (LFSCs) differently. A study on consumers in Atlantic Canada found that post-pandemic, consumers perceive SFSCs to deliver more social benefits compared to pre-pandemic. Supporting the local economy, food safety, freshness, and product quality are key motivators for shopping from SFSCs. The pandemic did not significantly alter consumer spending and frequency of shopping from SFSCs.

Explaining intention to reduce red and processed meat in the UK and Italy using the theory of planned behaviour, meat-eater identity, and the Transtheoretical model

Emily Wolstenholme et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the psychosocial factors associated with intentions to reduce red and processed meat consumption in participants from the UK and Italy, using a framework combining the Theory of Planned Behaviour with meat-eater identity and the Transtheoretical Model. The results showed differences in the impact of subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, and meat-eater identity on behavioral intention among participants at different stages of change and in the two countries, while attitude remained a consistent predictor. These findings contribute to understanding how reduced meat consumption can be encouraged in different populations.
