Foliar zinc fertilization improves yield, biofortification and nutrient-use efficiency of upland rice

Akshay Kumar Yogi et al.

Summary: Zinc deficiency is a major health challenge, especially where rice is the main food source due to its low bioavailable zinc content. Recent research has shown the value of biofortification to increase rice grain zinc concentration. In this study, different zinc fertilizer management methods were tested for upland rice genotypes in northeastern India. The Bhalum-3 genotype achieved higher grain yield and productivity compared to the other tested genotypes. Applying zinc sulfate foliar spray increased grain and straw yield, as well as grain zinc concentration. Foliar application of zinc resulted in the highest rates of hulling, milling, and head rice recovery. To enhance nutritional security and achieve higher rice yields in soils with low phytoavailable zinc, foliar zinc fertilizers are recommended.

Triple-zero tillage and system intensification lead to enhanced productivity, micronutrient biofortification and moisture-stress tolerance ability in chickpea in a pearlmillet-chickpea cropping system of semi-arid climate

Ram Swaroop Bana et al.

Summary: The pearlmillet-chickpea cropping system (PCCS) is becoming important in semi-arid regions of south-Asia due to its low water requirement. However, chickpea faces soil moisture deficit compared to pearlmillet, which limits the sustainability of PCCS. Moisture management and system intensification, particularly in chickpea, are crucial for sustaining PCCS. The study found that conservation agriculture (CA) improved chickpea grain yield, nutrient uptake, and biochemical properties, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing soil microbial population and enzyme activities.

Long-term straw mulch underpins crop yield and improves soil quality more efficiently than plastic mulch in different maize and wheat systems

Mingda Wang et al.

Summary: This study collected 202 peer-reviewed publications to compare the effects of plastic mulch (PM) and straw mulch (SM) on crop yields and soil quality. The results showed that PM significantly increased grain yields in mono crops, while SM had better agronomic performance in long-term experiments. However, SM had a more remarkable improvement on soil quality, making it a better choice for addressing the challenges of food security, soil degradation, and environmental mitigation.

Interplay between nano zinc oxide-coated urea and summer green manuring in basmati rice under basmati rice-wheat cropping system: implications on yield response, nutrient acquisition and grain fortification

Kirttiranjan Baral et al.

Summary: Identifying appropriate nutrient management options is crucial for enhancing the nutritional status and yield of basmati rice. In this study, the integration of zinc oxide nanoparticles with organic source green manuring was investigated to enrich basmati rice with micronutrients and promote protein nutrition. The results showed that the combination of zinc and urea significantly increased the grain yield of basmati rice and improved the micronutrient content in the milled rice. The highest protein content in basmati rice grain was observed when it was grown after Sesbania aculeata residue.

Influence of feedlot manure on reactive phosphorus in rainfall runoff during the transition from continuous to legacy phases

J. J. Miller et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of different types of manure and bedding materials on reactive phosphorus loss in runoff. It found that there was minimal difference in phosphorus loss between different manure and bedding types; however, increasing application rates led to higher phosphorus loss. The termination of long-term manure applications significantly reduced phosphorus loss, indicating that continuous manure application may lead to phosphorus accumulation in soil.
