Sustainability analysis of biorefineries based on country socio-economic and environmental context: A step-by-step way for the integral analysis of biomass upgrading processes

Juan Camilo Solarte-Toro et al.

Summary: A methodological approach for estimating the sustainability performance of biorefineries is proposed, based on the evaluation of technical, economic, environmental, and social metrics. This approach allows flexibility in designing biorefineries using knowledge-based or optimization approaches. The sustainability index is introduced as an indicator to compare different biorefinery configurations. An avocado case study is analyzed, and the obtained sustainability index suggests the need for process improvement and the development of new products. The sustainability index is proposed as an easily calculable and understandable indicator for stakeholders and decision-making groups.

Life cycle sustainability assessment of advanced treatment techniques for urban wastewater reuse and sewage sludge resource recovery

Raphael Ricardo Zepon Tarpani et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants can contribute to sustainable development and a transition to a circular economy by generating valuable resources through advanced treatment techniques. In this paper, a life cycle sustainability assessment is conducted to evaluate the environmental, economic, and social aspects of these techniques. The results show that nanofiltration is the most sustainable option for advanced wastewater treatment, while agricultural application of sludge is the most sustainable technique for resource recovery.

A framework for the design of sustainable multi-input second-generation biorefineries through process simulation: A case study for the valorization of lignocellulosic and starchy waste from the plantain agro-industry

James A. Gomez et al.

Summary: This study proposed a general methodological framework for the design and analysis of multi-input biorefineries to maximize the valorization of plantain agro-industry residues. The framework involved independent processing of starchy and lignocellulosic materials and employed process simulation and hierarchical process design procedures. A case study applied the framework to design a biorefinery and identified the distribution of key residues that maximized the net present value. The results demonstrated the high potential of plantain residues as feedstock for value-added product production.
