Implementing smart waste management system for a sustainable circular economy in the textile industry

Naimur Rahman Chowdhury et al.

Summary: In recent years, global supply chains have been redesigning their processes to achieve sustainable production and consumption, leading to the concept of a zero-waste circular economy gaining attention. The textile industry, which has a significant environmental impact, is attempting to transition to a circular economy model through Smart Waste Management Systems (SWMS). However, challenges arise due to industry complexity, changing consumer behavior, and lack of standards. This study addresses these challenges using a hybrid approach and highlights the critical step of efficient waste recovery monitoring and control in adopting SWMS.

Circular supply chains in the era of industry 4.0: A systematic literature review

Emilia Taddei et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the synergistic implementation of Circular Economy (CE) and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) in industrial contexts and its impact on Supply Chain (SC) efficiency and competitiveness. A systematic literature review is conducted to investigate and systematize the knowledge around circular SC enabled by CE and I4.0. The study identifies the major trends in terms of contribution type, LC phases, I4.0 technologies, Triple Bottom Line (TBL) layers, CE strategies, and SC typologies. The results show a predominance of economic and environmental aspects in sustainability, a prevalence of internet of things, big data analytics, and cloud technologies in I4.0, and a focus on reuse-recycle-remanufacturing, waste management, and material/energy efficiency in CE strategies. The paper contributes to building an integrated knowledge of the threefold research context and provides a theoretical framework for practitioners to approach the transition to circular SC.

Mapping and testing circular economy product-level indicators: A critical review

Adeline Jerome et al.

Summary: This review fills the gap in understanding the specificities captured by circular economy (CE) indicators and their application in real cases, by describing and comparing the resource-related effects captured by existing resource-based product-level indicators. The study maps the flows and processes quantified by these indicators, tests them on seven real cases, and compares the results with life cycle assessment (LCA) findings. The review reveals significant divergence in the scope of the indicators, with limited consideration for important aspects of the CE such as resource use in the use phase and lifetime extension strategies. The study highlights the need for a set of single-focus indicators to outline trade-offs and suggests that CE indicators cannot easily replace LCA.

Approach to assess the performance of waste management systems towards a circular economy: waste management system development stage concept (WMS-DSC)

Alessio Campitelli et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel holistic approach to assess the performance of waste management systems, called the Waste Management System Development Stage Concept (WMS-DSC). The concept categorizes waste management systems into different development stages, enabling the identification of symptoms, causes, and potential measures for improvement. It can be used to assess the current status of a waste management system, identify possible measures for implementation, check system conditions, monitor progress, and compare systems across cities. The concept consists of five stages, ranging from the absence of essential elements to the full implementation of a circular economy. By equating the highest stage to the objectives of a sustainable circular economy, the concept helps identify targets and steps towards a future best practice.
