Life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis of nitrogen recovery by ammonia air-stripping from wastewater treatment

Saurajyoti Kar et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants with anaerobic digestion of biosolids can recover nitrogen through air stripping and produce ammonium sulfate for agricultural use. This study compares the cost and environmental impact of recovering ammonia from the sidestream of WWTPs to AS production from the Haber Bosch process. The results show that air stripping technology offers a more environmentally and economically favorable option for nitrogen recovery and AS production at WWTPs.

Ammonium-nitrogen recovery as struvite from swine wastewater using various magnesium sources

Thi-Hanh Ha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the optimized conditions for treating swine wastewater and producing struvite crystals using swine slurry, commercial MgCl2, and seawater as magnesium sources. The results showed that swine slurry is a feasible alternative for nutrient recovery. Under the conditions of pH 9.0 and [P]0/ [Mg]0/ [N]0 M ratio = 1.2/1.0/1.0, the struvite precipitation process achieved high removal efficiencies for nitrogen, phosphorus, and magnesium. The harvested precipitate had a high struvite content with low heavy metal impurity, making it suitable for use as fertilizer.

Analysis of incentive policies for phosphorus recovery at livestock facilities in the Great Lakes area

Edgar Martin-Hernandez et al.

Summary: Livestock operations have become more intensified in recent decades, leading to the rise of large concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Intensification has both decreased production costs and caused significant environmental impacts, such as nutrient runoff. Implementing nutrient recovery systems in CAFOs can mitigate these impacts, but may affect their economic performance. Incentive policies for phosphorus recovery technologies in CAFOs are designed and analyzed, showing economic viability in larger operations due to economies of scale. For smaller operations, phosphorus credits progressively improve profitability.

Anaerobic digestate management, environmental impacts, and techno-economic challenges

Barbara Lamolinara et al.

Summary: Digestate is a nutrient-rich by-product from organic waste anaerobic digestion, but it can contribute to nutrient pollution without comprehensive management strategies. This study explores various aspects of digestate production, including feedstocks, processing technologies, economics, product quality, impurities, incentives, and regulations. The results indicate that feedstock, processing technology, and process operating conditions significantly influence the characteristics of digestate products. Incentive policies and regulations play a crucial role in promoting economic benefits. However, there is a lack of quality assurance certification systems for commercializing digestate products. Further development of technologies, processes, incentives, quality regulation, and social awareness is necessary for the sustainable and safe use of digestate in different applications. Future research should focus on circular business models and standardized international regulations for digestate products.

Nitrogen recovery from pig slurry by struvite precipitation using a low-cost magnesium oxide

S. Astals et al.

Summary: Our research successfully optimized the technology for recovering ammonia nitrogen from pig manure by using a stabilizing agent synthesized from LG-MgO and phosphoric acid. The experimental results showed that the H3PO4/LG-MgO ratio controlled the magnesium phosphate mineral phase of the stabilizing agent.

Global nutrient equity for people and the planet

Helena Kahiluoto et al.

Summary: Global redistribution of accumulated nutrients can enhance food security and counteract degradation of critical Earth system processes by trading accumulated nutrient rights through a 'one Earth currency'. Processing residue and sediment nutrients can help meet the needs of food-insecure regions, triggering required innovations in processing, logistics, and thinking.
