Basis for high-affinity ethylene binding by the ethylene receptor ETR1 of Arabidopsis

Beenish J. Azhar et al.

Summary: The gaseous hormone ethylene is perceived in plants by membrane-bound receptors, with ETR1 from Arabidopsis being the most well-studied receptor. An Asp residue within the ETR1 transmembrane domain is found to play a critical role in ethylene binding. Mutating the Asp to Asn results in a functional receptor with reduced affinity for ethylene, but it still mediates ethylene responses in plants. This study proposes a new structural model for the mechanism of ethylene binding and signal transduction, which shares similarities with a mammalian olfactory receptor.

Recent Advances in the Bacterial Phytohormone Modulation of Plant Growth

Ma. del Carmen Orozco-Mosqueda et al.

Summary: Phytohormones are important regulators of plant growth and development, and also produced by plant growth-promoting bacteria. These bacterial phytohormones can modulate plant physiology and genetics, and have beneficial effects on plant growth. This review highlights the recent advances in understanding the functions and potential applications of bacterial phytohormones in agriculture.

Something old, something new: Conservation of the ethylene precursor 1-amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid as a signaling molecule

Dongdong Li et al.

Summary: Research has found that ACC, a precursor of the plant hormone ethylene, can function as a signal in nonseed plants, even though it is inefficiently converted to ethylene. Distinct responses to ACC have been observed in different aspects of growth and development in liverworts and angiosperms, suggesting that ACC itself may have served as a signal before becoming the ethylene precursor in seed plants. These findings open up the possibility of uncovering a conserved ACC signaling pathway in plants and have implications for the use of ACC as a substitute for ethylene treatment in seed plants.

Phytohormones as Growth Regulators During Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Plants

Ayman EL Sabagh et al.

Summary: Phytohormones play a crucial role in regulating plant growth and development, especially under stress conditions. The interaction of different phytohormones helps plants grow under adverse conditions by triggering signaling pathways. Various studies have highlighted the role of phytohormones in plant responses to environmental stresses.

The regulation of ethylene biosynthesis: a complex multilevel control circuitry

Jolien Pattyn et al.

Summary: The biosynthesis of the plant hormone ethylene is controlled by a complex regulatory network involving transcriptional and posttranslational control of precursor synthesis enzymes and metabolic flux. Various factors, including transcription factors and posttranslational modifications, regulate the activity and stability of enzymes involved in ethylene production. Additionally, the nonproteinogenic amino acid ACC, a key intermediate in ethylene biosynthesis, is tightly regulated through conjugation and translocation processes.

Summary: Bacteria producing ACC deaminase can promote plant growth, enhance plant resistance to salt stress, and inhibit the growth of certain phytopathogens. The genome of these bacteria contains genetic elements involved in nutrient acquisition, stress tolerance, root exudate metabolism, and plant defense resistance, making them versatile in beneficial plant-microbe interactions.

Are Cyanobacteria an Ancestor of Chloroplasts or Just One of the Gene Donors for Plants and Algae?

Summary: The hypothesis that chloroplasts originated from cyanobacterial endosymbiosis has received support, but recent studies indicate that the relationship between chloroplasts and cyanobacteria may be more complex, involving multiple gene flows. Chloroplast formation in plants may not only be a single endosymbiotic event.

1-Aminocyclopropane-1-Carboxylate Deaminase-Producing Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Improve Drought Stress Tolerance in Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.)

Bingbing Duan et al.

Summary: PGPRs producing ACC deaminase were isolated from grapevine rhizosphere in arid regions of China. Two strains, DR3 and DR6, showed high phosphate solubilization, nitrogen fixation, IAA, and exopolysaccharides secretion potential, effectively promoting grapevine growth under drought stress conditions. The inoculation with these PGPRs enhanced soil and plant nutrient levels, altered plant growth parameters, and improved grapevines' ability to cope with drought stress.
