Assessment of antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation of Enterococcus species isolated from different pig farm environments in Poland

Katarzyna Grudlewska-Buda et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the occurrence and antimicrobial susceptibility of EFA and EFM strains isolated from a pig farm environment and determined the biofilm formation ability of identified Enterococcus spp. strains. The results showed the presence of antibiotic-resistant strains in the pig farm environment, posing significant challenges and threats to the clinical management of enterococcal infections. Therefore, monitoring trends in this biological phenomenon is of great importance to public health.

Biofilm Formation Capacity and Presence of Virulence Determinants among Enterococcus Species from Milk and Raw Milk Cheeses

Joanna Gajewska et al.

Summary: Bacterial biofilm is a major hazard in the food industry, and it is an important virulence property of enterococci. A study examined 85 Enterococcus strains isolated from raw milk and soft-ripened cheeses, and found that a significant percentage of isolates from both sources were able to form biofilm. The presence of certain genetic determinants was also identified. The ability of enterococci to produce biofilm emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring of microbial adhesion mechanisms.

Summary: Enterococcus spp. were isolated from PDO-cheese of Azeita and Nisa, showing high levels of resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics. Some isolates were considered multidrug-resistant. Further surveillance for antimicrobial drug resistance is important to prevent potential risks associated with horizontal gene transfer events.

A high level of antibiotic resistance in Klebsiella and Aeromonas isolates from street water sold in Mozambique, associated with the prevalence of extended-spectrum and AmpC ss-lactamases

Acacio Salamandane et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the resistance profile and prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes in Klebsiella spp. and Aeromonas spp. isolated from street-sold water in Maputo. The results showed high resistance to β-lactam antibiotics in Klebsiella and resistance to cefoxitin and ampicillin in Aeromonas. ESBL and AmpC genes were the most prevalent antibiotic resistance genes. It is crucial to improve waterborne disease control strategies and raise public awareness about the potential health implications of multidrug-resistant strains.

Enterococcus faecium GEFA01 alleviates hypercholesterolemia by promoting reverse cholesterol transportation via modulating the gut microbiota-SCFA axis

Wenfeng Xu et al.

Summary: This study identified a cholesterol-lowering strain, Enterococcus faecium GEFA01, from healthy lean individuals and evaluated its cholesterol-lowering capacity in mice fed a high-cholesterol and high-fat diet. E. faecium GEFA01 exhibited a high cholesterol removal rate and significantly decreased cholesterol levels in mice by modulation of gut microbiota short-chain fatty acid axis. The findings suggest that E. faecium GEFA01 has potential as a probiotic candidate for lowering cholesterol levels in the future.

Phenotype-Genotype Correlations and Distribution of Key Virulence Factors in Enterococcus faecalis Isolated from Patients with Urinary Tract Infections

Yomna A. Hashem et al.

Summary: The study investigated the correlation between different virulence factors in Enterococcus faecalis clinical isolates causing urinary tract infections. Variability in virulence gene distribution was observed among the isolates, with no specific pattern associated with UTI. All isolates carried at least ace and pil genes for adherence, and six isolates carried the entire set of investigated genes. Statistical analysis revealed cyl as a biomarker for hemolytic activity, fsrB as a diagnostic biomarker for gelatinase activity, and gelE-sprE as predictors for biofilm formation strength in E. faecalis.

Enterococcal Endocarditis: Hiding in Plain Sight

Aaron M. T. Barnes et al.

Summary: Enterococcus faecalis is a major opportunistic bacterial pathogen that can form stable biofilm colonies on undamaged surfaces, potentially allowing for undetected infection in asymptomatic individuals and serving as a reservoir for later clinical endocarditis. This ability to persist and hide in plain sight may contribute to the increasing clinical relevance of this pathogen in various host tissues.

Microbiological assessment of street foods at the point of sale in Maputo (Mozambique)

Acacio Salamandane et al.

Summary: The street food sold in Maputo shows unsatisfactory microbiological quality and safety, with high proportions of unsatisfactory samples found in both traditional hot and cold foods. While L. monocytogenes and Salmonella were tested negative, approximately 25% of the samples were classified as unsatisfactory/potentially hazardous when coagulase-positive staphylococci was used as a food safety indicator. The results highlight the need for improved sanitary conditions and the development of good manufacturing practices for street food in Maputo, Mozambique.
