Performance evaluation of solar still using energy storage biomaterial with porous surface: An experimental study and environmental analysis

Ramasamy Dhivagar et al.

Summary: The use of energy storage material can significantly affect the water productivity of solar still. Solar desalination has the advantages of utilizing solar energy, being cost-effective, and without environmental pollution. In this study, a novel conch shell biomaterial was used as an energy storage material and porous media in a solar still to improve its performance. The results showed that the productivity, energy efficiency, exergy efficiency, CPL, and CO2 emissions mitigation of the modified solar still using conch shells were all improved compared to conventional solar still.

Performance evaluation of a solar desalination-hot water system using heat pipe vacuum tube parabolic trough solar collector-An experimental study with Taguchi analysis

Bagher Omidi et al.

Summary: This study investigated a hybrid system that utilizes renewable energy to generate hot water and distilled water. The system uses a parabolic-trough heat pipe solar collector to produce hot water and provide drinking water. By increasing the temperature of the evaporator area and the condenser of the heat pipe, the system is able to directly connect to the desalination system's saltwater tank. The study evaluated the effects of water flow rate, number of heat pipes, and the filling porous medium of the vacuum tube on the system performance.

Experimental investigation of a stepped solar still employing a phase change material, a conical tank, and a solar dish

Mohamed M. Khairat Dawood et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of configuring an external solar dish on the performance of a stepped slope solar still (SS) in an experimental setting. The use of an external solar dish increases the effects of the water basin, resulting in a higher rate of evaporation. The study compares the performance of a standard stepped SS, a stepped SS using phase change material (PCM), and a stepped SS using PCM combined with a solar dish.

Performance enhancement of a solar still using magnetic powder as an energy storage medium-exergy and environmental analysis

Ramasamy Dhivagar et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of magnetic powders on modified solar still (MPSS) performance and found that the use of magnetic powders improves the thermal performance and water productivity of MPSS compared to conventional solar still (CSS). The use of black iron oxide magnetic powder as a thermal storage material and absorber medium helps to increase solar radiation absorption and enhance performance during peak solar irradiation hours. The results also show improved energy and exergy efficiencies and CO2 reduction in MPSS.
