An Antisense RNA Fine-Tunes Gene Expression of the Type II MazEF Toxin-Antitoxin System

Taylor Van Gundy et al.

Summary: In this study, we report the functional characterization of an antisense RNA (aMEF) that acts as a dual regulator for the mazEF toxin-antitoxin system. Unlike other antisense RNAs, aMEF stimulates the synthesis and translation of mazEF instead of inhibiting and degrading it. Furthermore, our findings suggest that the lack of conservation of antisense RNA promoters does not necessarily correlate with their functionality.

Coupled Transcription-Translation in Prokaryotes: An Old Couple With New Surprises

Mikel Irastortza-Olaziregi et al.

Summary: Coupled transcription-translation (CTT) is a hallmark of prokaryotic gene expression, involved in important gene regulation processes. Despite progress in understanding the cellular signals coordinating CTT, certain aspects of its molecular architecture remain controversial. Studies questioning the occurrence of CTT suggest that transcription and translation can be artificially uncoupled under certain conditions.
