Controlling Near-Infrared Photoluminescence Properties of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Substituent Effect in Stepwise Chemical Functionalization

Yutaka Maeda et al.

Summary: The stepwise chemical functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was employed to selectively control site-specific functionalization and photoluminescence (PL). The addition site and the magnitude of the local band gap were found to be controlled by the steric hindrance of the added group and the R value in an (n,m) chiral nanotube.

Photoluminescence Properties of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Influenced by the Tether Length of Reagents with Two Reactive Sites

Yui Konno et al.

Summary: Functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) using a series of bromoalkanes and dibromoalkanes with different tether lengths was investigated. Longer tether lengths (six or more) resulted in SWNT adducts with two new photoluminescence (PL) peaks, while shorter tether lengths (3-5) produced single peaks. The formation mechanism of functionalized adducts was found to be influenced by the tether length, with shorter tethers tending to produce kinetic products.

Quantum Defects: What Pairs with the Aryl Group When Bonding to the sp2 Carbon Lattice of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes?

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: Water unexpectedly acts as a nucleophilic agent in the diazonium reaction with carbon nanotubes involving chlorosulfonic acid, providing -OH as the pairing group. Replacing water with other nucleophilic solvents allows the creation of organic color centers (OCCs) with entirely new pairing groups, enabling systematic control over defect pairs and the optical properties of resulting color centers.

ortho-Substituted Aryldiazonium Design for the Defect Configuration-Controlled Photoluminescent Functionalization of Chiral Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Boda Yu et al.

Summary: Defect functionalization of SWCNTs through chemical modification is a promising strategy for generating near-infrared photoluminescence. In this study, aryldiazonium reagents with pi-conjugated ortho-substituents were used to selectively emit single defect photoluminescence in a specific wavelength range.

Submilligram-scale separation of near-zigzag single-chirality carbon nanotubes by temperature controlling a binary surfactant system

Dehua Yang et al.

Summary: A method to separate SWCNTs by chiral angle through temperature control of a binary surfactant system was reported in this study, resulting in efficient separation of 11 single-chirality SWCNT species including multiple zigzag and near-zigzag species at a submilligram scale. Lowering the temperature induced selective adsorption and reorganization of the cosurfactants on SWCNTs with different chiral angles, amplifying their interaction difference with gel. This work is believed to be a significant step towards industrial separation of single-chirality zigzag and near-zigzag SWCNTs.
