Thermodynamic analysis and experimental investigation of the water spray cooling of photovoltaic solar panels

Yunis Khan et al.

Summary: This paper explores the use of water spray as an alternative cooling method for PV solar panels. The experimental setup for water spray cooling was established in Sultanpur, India, and tested under different climate conditions. The results showed that water spray cooling reduced the panel temperature from 53 to 23 degrees C and increased the total power output by 15.3%. The system's effectiveness was also enhanced by its cleaning effects. Additionally, the experiments demonstrated that an increase of 1 degree C in panel temperature resulted in a 0.5% drop in PV cell efficiency, while a 0.2 degree C temperature drop through single nozzle spray cooling led to a 0.28% increase in the panel's electrical efficiency.

Performance comparison of organic Rankine cycles integrated with solar based combined cycle: A thermodynamic and exergoenvironmental analysis

Yunis Khan et al.

Summary: In this study, two configurations of combined intercooled cascade supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO(2)) cycle/organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and the combined intercooled cascade sCO(2) cycle/parallel double evaporator ORC (PDORC) were compared in terms of their thermodynamic performance. Solar power tower (SPT) was used as the heat source for both configurations. The addition of basic ORC and PDORC to the standalone intercooled cascade sCO(2) cycle increased the thermal efficiency by 2.26% and 6.66% respectively. Configuration-2, which included PDORC, outperformed configuration-1 in terms of waste heat recovery, with an optimized thermal efficiency of 52.34%. An exergoenvironmental analysis was also conducted, showing a decrease in exergoenvironmental impact index and an increase in exergetic stability factor with increasing direct normal irradiation (DNI).

Definition of Scenarios for Modern Power Systems with a High Renewable Energy Share

Carlos Collados-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This article explores different energy scenarios to achieve stability, seasonal demand matching, and economic feasibility in future energy systems dominated by renewable energy sources. The study quantifies the scenarios using an optimization-based algorithm based on real data from specific locations in Europe. The research demonstrates that solar photovoltaic and wind are the backbone of renewable energy integration, however, they lack flexibility for achieving a very high share in the energy mix. Solar thermal and pumped hydro are identified as crucial for covering the final range of integration due to their high flexibility, despite being expensive for low share.
