Relationship between ganglion cell Complex thickness and vision in age-related macular degeneration treated with aflibercept

Cihan Buyukavsar et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the correlation between ganglion cell complex thickness (GCCT) and vision compared with choroidal thickness (CT) and central retinal thickness (CRT) in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) undergoing intravitreal aflibercept treatment. The results suggest that a reduction in 3-month GCCT indicates a good long-term vision outcome. Baseline GCCT also showed stronger correlation with functional response compared to CT and CRT. Therefore, GCCT may have prognostic value for vision impairment.

Quantum similarity and QSPR in Euclidean-, and Minkowskian-Banach spaces

Ramon Carbo-Dorca

Summary: This paper first describes the relationship between Euclidean and Minkowskian Banach spaces through the definition of a metric or signature vector. It then discusses how these spaces can be generated using homothecies of the unit sphere or shell. This possibility allows for a dimension condensation process, addressing the incompleteness of classical QSPR procedures regardless of the algorithm used.

Lifestyle Intervention Randomized Controlled Trial for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD-Life): Study Design

Alexandra P. M. de Koning-Backus et al.

Summary: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has a strong genetic basis, which can be reduced by environmental factors such as smoking and a healthy diet. However, many ophthalmologists do not inform patients about these beneficial lifestyle changes due to lack of trust and measurement methods. To address this, the AMD-Life study aims to investigate if personalized risk-profiling and coaching can motivate patients to change their lifestyle. The study also aims to identify biomarkers that reflect lifestyle changes beneficial for AMD.

Co-delivery of microRNA-150 and quercetin by lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for the targeted treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Wei Li et al.

Summary: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease that causes severe vision loss in middle-aged and elderly patients due to choroidal neovascularization (CNV). Current treatments for CNV are ineffective and can have adverse effects. This study developed solid lipid nanoparticles modified with an Asp-Gly-Arg peptide to target endothelial cells during abnormal angiogenesis. These nanoparticles successfully co-delivered microRNA-150 (mR150) and the antiangiogenic drug quercetin, inhibiting CNV without retinal toxicity in a mouse model.

Impact of COVID-19 Confinement on Quality of Life of Patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A Two-Wave Panel Study

Maria R. Sanabria et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the general health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) treated with intravitreal anti-VEGF injections and determine the impact of COVID-19 on their HRQoL. Clinical outcomes, HRQoL, and tangible support were assessed through two surveys. The results showed that patients perceived a worsening in HRQoL after confinement, but their social support improved.

T. Y. Alvin Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the correlation between intraretinal hyperreflective foci (HRF) and visual function in patients with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD). The results show that the HRF group had significantly worse VA, LLVA, qCSF, and microperimetry. The presence of HRF is associated with poorer cone function.

Comparative Effectiveness of Intravitreal Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Therapies for Managing Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A Meta-Analysis

Frederic Matonti et al.

Summary: This review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and treatment burden of different anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) treatment regimens in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The study found that the PRN (pro re nata) regimen, which allows for injections to be administered as needed, had less efficacy compared to monthly and treat-and-extend (T&E) regimens. The T&E regimens showed similar efficacy to monthly regimens but with a reduced number of injections, with aflibercept requiring the lowest number of injections.

Age-related macular degeneration: Epidemiology, genetics, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and targeted therapy

Yanhui Deng et al.

Summary: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex eye disorder that leads to incurable blindness in the elderly, with wet and dry forms classified as the advanced stages. Genetic factors, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and aging all play a role in the development of AMD, with current treatment focusing on anti-VEGF therapy for wet AMD. New AMD drugs and iPSC-derived RPE cell therapy show promise in improving AMD treatment in the near future.
