BMSC-derived extracellular matrix better optimizes the microenvironment to support nerve regeneration

Shengran Wang et al.

Summary: A favorable microenvironment is crucial for nerve regeneration. This study investigates the components and spatial organization of extracellular matrix (ECM) secreted by different cells and finds that ECM derived from bone marrow mesenchymal cells (BMSCs) is more similar to acellular nerves. ECM-modified nerve grafts (ECM-NGs) co-cultivated with BMSCs exhibit the most promising nerve repair properties and create a superior microenvironment for nerve regeneration, indicating a potential alternative for clinical repair of peripheral nerve defects.

Metformin prevents methylglyoxal-induced apoptosis by suppressing oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of metformin (MET) on apoptosis induced by methylglyoxal (MGO) in diabetic vascular complications. It is found that MET can prevent cell apoptosis induced by MGO by suppressing oxidative stress and increasing antioxidative capacity through ROS-mediated PI3K/Akt and Nrf2/HO-1 pathways.

Metformin: Is it a drug for all reasons and diseases?

Chris R. Triggle et al.

Summary: Metformin, a commonly used drug for type 2 diabetes, has shown potential therapeutic effects for other diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. However, there is still debate on whether metformin is effective for all diseases and whether its benefits are solely due to its anti-hyperglycemic and insulin-sensitizing effects.

Effect of Pre-Induced Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Coated Cellulose/Collagen Nanofibrous Nerve Conduit on Regeneration of Transected Facial Nerve

GwangWon Cho et al.

Summary: The effect of a pre-induced MSC-coated cellulose/collagen nanofibrous nerve conduit on facial nerve regeneration was evaluated in a rat model both in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that group II, treated with the pre-induced MSC-coated conduit, exhibited the highest degree of recovery based on functional and histological evaluations.

The Effect of Electrical Stimulation on Nerve Regeneration Following Peripheral Nerve Injury

Luke Juckett et al.

Summary: Peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) often result in lifelong disability with rare complete functional recovery. Intraoperative electrical stimulation (ES) is a promising surgical adjunct that can augment the intrinsic molecular pathways of nerve regeneration. Clinical trials have shown that ES can be an efficacious therapy to improve patient outcomes following PNIs.

Andrew L. O'Brien et al.

Summary: Peripheral nerve injuries can result in life-altering functional deficits, even with the ability of peripheral nerves to regenerate axons after injury. Advances in nerve regeneration and repair, such as electrical stimulation, gene therapy, and surgical technique advancements, are crucial for overcoming the physiological shortcomings of axonal regeneration.

Nerve growth factor protects salivary glands from irradiation-induced damage

Shen-Sui Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that NGF expression is upregulated after radiotherapy and plays a protective role in salivary glands by reducing radiation-induced cell apoptosis and protecting against damage. NGF protects salivary glands from radiation-induced apoptosis by de-phosphorylating JNK kinase rather than promoting AKT phosphorylation.

Extracellular Environment-Controlled Angiogenesis, and Potential Application for Peripheral Nerve Regeneration

Shingo Saio et al.

Summary: Endothelial cells acquire different phenotypes to establish functional vascular networks, with Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) playing a key role in regulating vascular development. The spatiotemporal localization of angiogenic factors and the extracellular matrix are crucial for proper regulation of angiogenesis. Close interactions between the vascular and neural systems involve shared molecular mechanisms to coordinate developmental and regenerative processes.

Licochalcone D Ameliorates Oxidative Stress-Induced Senescence via AMPK Activation

Nagarajan Maharajan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Lico D reduces oxidative stress-induced senescence by upregulating AMPK-mediated autophagy activation. Lico D treatment reverses the increase in senescence markers in the heart and hippocampal tissues induced by oxidative stress, and also decreases the expression levels of RAGE in the hippocampal tissue. Such findings suggest the antioxidant, anti-senescent, and cardioprotective effects of Lico D through AMPK activation and autophagy.
