Long covid outcomes at one year after mild SARS-CoV-2 infection: nationwide cohort study

Barak Mizrahi et al.

Summary: This study suggests that patients with mild covid-19 may experience some clinical sequelae within a year after infection, but most of them resolve within a year. Age, sex, SARS-CoV-2 variants, and vaccination status are associated with the occurrence of these sequelae.

Two-year follow-up of patients with post-COVID-19 condition in Sweden: a prospective cohort study

Carl Wahlgren et al.

Summary: This study is one of the first to report long-term recovery outcomes in patients with post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) following hospitalization. The study found that over 40% of patients still experienced persisting symptoms and limitations in daily life four months after discharge. A follow-up at 24 months showed a high prevalence of persisting symptoms and a need for long-term follow-up and rehabilitation post COVID-19 infection.

Long-Term Sequelae of COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of One-Year Follow-Up Studies on Post-COVID Symptoms

Qing Han et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that COVID-19 survivors may experience persistent symptoms for at least 12 months, including fatigue, dyspnea, arthromyalgia, depression, anxiety, memory loss, concentration difficulties, and insomnia. Female patients and those with more severe initial illness are more likely to suffer from long-term sequelae after one year.

Summary: This review consolidates available data on the long-term cardiovascular complications of COVID-19 infection. Acute cardiovascular complications include myocarditis, pericarditis, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular dysfunction, and arrhythmia. Long-term follow-up shows increased incidence of arrhythmia, heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, right ventricular dysfunction, myocardial fibrosis, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Future research is important in understanding the clinical significance of these structural abnormalities and evaluating the effect of vaccines on preventing long-term cardiovascular complications.

Summary: Unexplained post-acute infection syndromes (PAISs) represent a group of chronic illnesses with overlapping clinical features with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). This review summarizes the current knowledge of PAISs and discusses the need for basic biomedical research into the underlying mechanisms of these enigmatic chronic diseases, including the post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC).

Summary: This study analyzed the US Department of Veterans Affairs national healthcare databases to investigate the occurrence of Long COVID and death risk after breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection. The findings showed that vaccination significantly reduced the risk of death and post-acute sequelae but did not eliminate them completely. These results underscore the importance of further research on prevention and post-acute care for breakthrough infections.

Health outcomes in people 2 years after surviving hospitalisation with COVID-19: a longitudinal cohort study

Lixue Huang et al.

Summary: With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a study was conducted to characterize the longitudinal evolution of health outcomes in hospitalized survivors of COVID-19 over a period of 2 years. The study found that although most survivors recovered and returned to work within 2 years, a significant proportion of them experienced persistent symptoms and health problems. These findings emphasize the need for further research and interventions to understand and reduce the risk of long-term COVID-19.

Duration of effectiveness of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 disease: results of a systematic review and meta-regression

Daniel R. Feikin et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the duration of protection provided by COVID-19 vaccines against various clinical outcomes. The findings indicate that the effectiveness or efficacy of the vaccines decreased from 1 to 6 months after full vaccination, but remained high against severe disease. Evaluating the effectiveness or efficacy of vaccines beyond 6 months is crucial for updating vaccine policies.
