Optimizing the Oxygen-Catalytic Performance of Zn-Mn-Co Spinel by Regulating the Bond Competition at Octahedral Sites

Zepan Wang et al.

Summary: By partially replacing Co3+ with the more electro-negative Mn3+ ion at the octahedral site, a ternary Zn-Mn-Co spinel oxide is formed, leading to a significant increase in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction/evolution activity. Physical characterization and theoretical calculations show that bond competition plays a crucial role in regulating the cobalt valence state and the electrocatalytic activity. The partial replacement of Co3+ by Mn3+ effectively modulates the adjacent Co-O bond and induces the Jahn-Teller effect, resulting in a change in crystal structure and optimization of the binding strength with reaction intermediates. The Mn-substituted ZnMn1.4Co0.6O4/NCNTs exhibit higher electrocatalytic activity than ZnCo2O4/NCNTs and ZnMn2O4/NCNTs, indicating that the covalency of the Co-O bond determines the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of spinel ZnCo2O4. This study introduces the competition between adjacent Co-O and Mn-O bonds through the B-Oh-O-B-Oh edge-sharing geometry, demonstrating that ion substitution at octahedral sites with less electronegative cations can effectively enhance the electrocatalytic performance of cobalt-based spinel oxides.

Triflylpyridinium Enables Rapid and Scalable Controlled Reduction of Carboxylic Acids to Aldehydes using Pinacolborane

Du Chen et al.

Summary: Developing new and efficient methods for the controlled conversion of carboxylic acids to aldehydes is crucial. In this study, a rapid, modular and scalable method using pinacolborane at ambient temperature was developed. The reduction of acylpyridinium by HBpin enables the direct synthesis of aldehydes from carboxylic acids, with lower activation energy compared to the product aldehyde. The synthetic advantage of this protocol is demonstrated through scalable synthesis of aldehyde via continuous flow process.

Constructing high-capacitance electrochemical capacitors through the introduction of V ions into MoS2/Ni3S2 nanosheets

Jingxuan Liu et al.

Summary: Designing high energy density electrode materials is crucial for improving the overall performance of supercapacitors. In this work, V-doped MoS2/Ni3S2 nanosheets grown on nickel foam by a convenient hydrothermal route were reported. The obtained 0.07V-MoS2/Ni3S2 composites deliver a specific capacitance of 960C/g at 1 A/g, thanks to their large specific surface area and rapid ion migration rate. These composites still maintain 71.65% of the initial capacity after 10,000 cycles. Several asymmetric supercapacitors assembled using these cathode materials achieve an energy density of 75 Wh/kg at a power density of 2700 W/kg. This work provides a feasible strategy for constructing high-performance transition metal compound electrode materials in future flexible energy storage electronics.
