Unambiguous Measurement of Local Hole Current in Organic Semiconductors Using Conductive Atomic Force Microscopy

Pravini S. Fernando et al.

Summary: Conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) is a widely used tool for studying the charge transport properties of organic semiconductor films with nanoscale resolution. By analyzing local hole current maps and current-voltage curves for three organic semiconductors, the influence of voltage polarity on image contrast and charge transport mechanisms is investigated. These measurements provide guidance for ensuring accurate probing of bulk properties of organic semiconductor films using C-AFM.

Quasi-Homojunction Organic Nonfullerene Photovoltaics Featuring Fundamentals Distinct from Bulk Heterojunctions

Yifan Wang et al.

Summary: In contrast to classical bulk heterojunction (BHJ) in organic solar cells (OSCs), the quasi-homojunction (QHJ) with extremely low donor content (<= 10 wt.%) is unusual and generally yields much lower device efficiency. However, by selecting appropriate polymer donors and nonfullerene acceptors, high-efficiency QHJ devices can be fabricated by generating free charges in the acceptor domains.

A Random Terpolymer Donor with Similar Monomers Enables 18.28% Efficiency Binary Organic Solar Cells with Well Polymer Batch Reproducibility

Hai-Rui Bai et al.

Summary: In this study, a family of polymer donors for organic solar cells (OSCs) was synthesized using a ternary copolymerization approach. The terpolymer D18-20%Cl, with an appropriate proportion of chlorinated monomer, demonstrated the best performance with improved morphology and charge transport when blended with Y6. This resulted in a top-ranked power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.28% for D18-20%Cl:Y6-based OSCs, the highest reported PCE for terpolymer-based binary OSCs.

Mixed molecular orientations promote charge transport in bulk heterojunction solar cells

Pravini S. Fernando et al.

Summary: By varying the molecular orientation of the polymer in bulk heterojunctions, it has been found that a mixed texture can enhance out-of-plane charge flow in solution processed organic solar cells. This highlights the importance of balancing in-plane and out-of-plane pathways for efficient charge percolation in bulk heterojunctions.

Electron Transport in Thin Films of Polymer and Small-Molecule Acceptors Visualized by Conductive Atomic Force Microscopy

Anjar Taufik Hidayat et al.

Summary: In this study, spatial variations in electron transport were characterized in thin films of PDI- and NDI-based acceptors and PCBM. Electron transport was found to be spatially inhomogeneous in PDI- and NDI-based polymer acceptor films, while relatively uniform in PDI-based small-molecule acceptor and PCBM films. Local electron currents in the NDI-based polymer film were higher than in the PCBM film due to local ordering of polymer chains, suggesting potential for further improvement in electron mobility via morphological optimizations. Conversely, electron transport was inhibited in PDI-based polymer and small-molecule acceptor films due to loose interchain p-p stacking. Nanoscale observation of local electron currents provides insights into performance limitations of nonfullerene acceptor films that cannot be estimated through macroscopic measurements.
