Crosslinked Polynorbornene-Based Anion Exchange Membranes with Perfluorinated Branch Chains

Dafu Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of perfluorinated substituent on the properties of anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Cross-linked polynorbornene-based AEMs with perfluorinated branch chains were prepared and showed low swelling ratio, high toughness, and high water uptake. These AEMs exhibited high hydroxide conductivity at low ion content due to the ion gathering and side chain microphase separation caused by the flexible backbone and perfluorinated branch chain. The introduction of perfluorinated branch chains provides a new approach to improve ion conductivity at low ion content and offers a referable way to prepare high-performance AEMs.

DFT insight of hydroxide degradation pathways for heterocyclic quaternary ammonium cations in anion exchange membranes

Kaiyu Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the degradation barriers and mechanisms of heterocyclic quaternary ammoniums (QAs) were calculated using density functional theory (DFT). It was found that the chair conformation and ring structure of heterocyclic QAs inhibit Hoffman degradation and that methyl SN2 is the primary degradation pathway. Higher ring strain and electron-withdrawing groups negatively impact stability. The position of substituted methyl groups significantly affects molecule stability.

Alkaline Stable Anion Exchange Membranes Based on Cross-Linked Poly(arylene ether sulfone) Bearing Dual Quaternary Piperidines for Enhanced Anion Conductivity at Low Water Uptake

Prem P. Sharma et al.

Summary: Alkaline stable anion exchange membranes based on cross-linked poly(arylene ether sulfone) grafted with dual quaternary piperidine units (XPAES-DP) were synthesized. The XPAES-DP membrane showed higher ionic conductivity and tensile strength compared to linear PAES based membranes. The chemical stability and consistent ionic conductivity of XPAES-DP membrane make it suitable for anion exchange membrane fuel cell applications. The single-cell assembled with XPAES-DP membrane exhibited high power density.

Summary: A series of ether-free polybenzimidazoles (PBIs) were synthesized as anion exchange membranes (AEMs). The PBIs showed improved solubility and exhibited both high anionic conductivity and alkaline stability. These materials could improve the phase interface between catalyst and AEMs and showed excellent oxidation stability in Fenton's reagent. Furthermore, the H2-O2 fuel cell using the PBIs as membrane achieved high open circuit voltage and peak power density.

Preparation of an Anion Exchange Membrane by Pyridine-Functionalized Polyether Ether Ketone To Improve Alkali Resistance Stability for an Alkali Fuel Cell

Yongjiang Yuan et al.

Summary: A highly stable anion exchange membrane (AEM) was constructed by linking bipyridine to a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) polymer, showing excellent ion conductivity and alkali stability. The cross-linking structure composed of 4,4'-bipyridine effectively weakened the attack of OH- on AEMs. Using a simple method to synthesize AEMs effectively balanced the loss of mechanical properties caused by water absorption and membrane swelling.

Crucial role of side-chain functionality in anion exchange membranes: Properties and alkaline fuel cell performance

Xiaomeng Chu et al.

Summary: The functionality of side-chains plays a critical role in the performance of anion exchange membrane (AEM) materials, with longer side-chains enhancing alkali stability and conductivity, while side-chains containing triazole groups can promote the formation of hydrogen-bond networks to improve ion transport. The AEMs with longer side-chains showed excellent stability under alkaline conditions, and the AEMFC using these side-chain type AEMs achieved a peak power density of 141.3 mW cm(-2) at a current density of 320 mA cm(-2).
