Freshwater fungi from karst landscapes in China and Thailand

Jing Yang et al.

Summary: Freshwater fungi were surveyed in karst regions in China and Thailand, and a wide range of sexual and asexual species were collected. Phylogenetic analysis classified these fungi into Dothideomycetes, Sordariomycetes, and Eurotiomycetes. Four new genera and 47 new species were identified, and their taxonomic placement and comparison with similar taxa were discussed.

Groenewaldia (Lentitheciaceae), a new corticolous fungal genus from India

K. C. Rajeshkumar et al.

Summary: North-western India is a hotspot for unique fungal biodiversity, particularly asexual Ascomycota. A new fungus with unusual synnemata-like structures and pigmented dictyoconidia was discovered in this region. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that this fungus belongs to a distinct lineage within Lentitheciaceae, and a new genus called Groenewaldia is introduced for it. Groenewaldia is the first synnematous member of Lentitheciaceae and is phylogenetically distant from all known genera in this family, forming a basal lineage adjacent to Pseudomurilentithecium.

Zuo-Peng Liu et al.

Summary: Microfungi associated with woody plants on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau were investigated, and a new genus Crassoascoma was discovered based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis. Four collections associated with Potentilla fruticosa were obtained from Gansu and Qinghai provinces in China, and they formed a distinct lineage within the Lentitheciaceae family.

Freshwater fungal numbers

Mark S. Calabon et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive account of fungal classification in freshwater habitats, based on biodiversity studies and recent morpho-phylogenetic analyses. The analysis includes 3,870 listed species with additional details on isolation source, habitat, geographical distribution, and molecular data. The study reveals that Ascomycota is the dominant phylum, with Sordariomycetes being the most abundant class in freshwater fungi.
