Ultrastructure and Physiological Characterization of Morchella Mitospores and Their Relevance in the Understanding of the Morel Life Cycle

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: Morels, a type of edible fungi belonging to the Ascomycete genus Morchella, are highly valued by gourmet chefs worldwide. This study focused on the mitospores of M. sextelata and found that they may function more as gamete-like structures rather than traditional conidia. This research contributes to a better understanding of the life cycle of economically and ecologically important morel fungi.

Dynamics of soil microbiome throughout the cultivation life cycle of morel (Morchella sextelata)

Chen Zhang et al.

Summary: By analyzing rhizosphere soil samples collected throughout the cultivation life cycle of M. sextelata, we found that the composition and functions of soil microbiome varied significantly among different fungal growth stages. We identified stage-associated biomarkers and confirmed the presence of primordium-associated microbes with potential key roles in primordium formation. Our study provides insights into the dynamic scenario of the soil microbiome during the cultivation of M. sextelata.

Mating-Type Genes Play an Important Role in Fruiting Body Development in Morchella sextelata

Qizheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of mating-type genes in the fruiting body development of true morels. It found that fruiting bodies cultivated with different mating-type strains showed no difference in appearance, but the ascus and ascospores had slight malformations in fruiting bodies obtained from the MAT1-1 strains. Transcript analysis revealed that the regulatory mechanisms of mating-type genes were conserved in ascomycetes fungi. RNA interference experiments confirmed the direct regulatory effect of mat1-2-1 on its target genes. The detection of both mat1-1-1 and mat1-2-1 in samples of primordium, pileus, and stipe suggests the importance of mating-type genes in the fruiting body development of M. sextelata.

Summary: The study found that the difference between successful and nonfructification of soil-cultivated mushrooms lies primarily in the diversity of fungal and bacterial communities in the soil. Summary: This study identified significant differences in gene expression between sclerotial and hyphal cells at the sclerotial initiation stage, indicating that sclerotial cells are more resistant to ROS stress through transcriptional regulation of related genes. This suggests a potential mechanism for the higher tolerance of sclerotial cells to oxidative stress compared to hyphal cells.
