Optimizing cultivation conditions for the highest expression of fungal allergens

Sandra Pfeiffer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to find optimal cultivation conditions for the highest expression of fungal allergens. Results showed that the expression of fungal allergens is highly species-dependent, and even closely related fungal species and highly conserved allergens display different expression patterns. The findings of this study are important for optimizing fungal cultivation and improving diagnostic specificity and sensitivity.

A systematic review of outdoor airborne fungal spore seasonality across Europe and the implications for health

Samuel Anees-Hill et al.

Summary: This systematic review analyzes the seasonality of outdoor fungal spores in Europe and its implications for health. The study found that Alternaria and Cladosporium were the most commonly reported genera, with longer seasons in Mediterranean regions. Meteorological variables and land-use were identified as the main factors influencing fungal seasonality. Further research is needed to address knowledge gaps and improve understanding and management strategies for fungal allergies.

Sensitization against Fungi in Patients with Airway Allergies over 20 Years in Germany

Susann Forkel et al.

Summary: Over the past 20 years, there has been a slight increase in the prevalence of sensitization to 12 fungi in central Germany, with significant increases in polysensitization to Alternaria, Aspergillus, and Cladosporium in the last decade. Sensitization to fungi is age-dependent, peaking in the 21-40 age group during the second decade.

The History, Present and Future of Allergen Standardization in the United States and Europe

Julia Zimmer et al.

Summary: This article reviews the historical approaches taken by the United States and European Union in standardizing allergen products, emphasizing the different paths pursued by the two entities. Currently, both paths rely on traditional immunological methods, but new technologies such as mass spectrometry have the potential to reshape the field of allergen standardization in the future.
