The Devastating Clinical Consequences of Child Abuse and Neglect: Increased Disease Vulnerability and Poor Treatment Response in Mood Disorders

Elizabeth T. C. Lippard et al.

Summary: A large body of evidence has demonstrated the long-term consequences of childhood maltreatment, which increases the risk for psychiatric and medical disorders. This review summarizes the effects of childhood maltreatment on vulnerability to mood disorders, highlighting the increased prevalence and associated risks. It discusses the persistent alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and inflammatory cytokines, as well as candidate genes, environmental factors, and neurobiological associations that may mediate these effects. The studies provide insights into modifiable mechanisms and guide treatment and prevention strategies.

Effects of sex hormones on brain GABA and glutamate levels in a cis- and transgender cohort

B. Spurny-Dworak et al.

Summary: This study used magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging (MRSI) to investigate the effect of gender-affirming hormone treatment (GHT) on neurotransmitter function in transgender individuals. The results showed that GHT led to a reduction in GABA+/tCr levels in the hippocampus, indicating the importance of hormone receptor activation and testosterone-induced neuroplasticity in this region. Additionally, elevated GABA levels were found in the female compared to the male insula, highlighting the need to include sex as a factor in future MRS studies.

Systematic review and critical appraisal of Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF)

Sylvia Georgieva et al.

Summary: The systematic review aims to critically appraise, compare, and summarize research articles validating the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form over the past ten years. The main results indicate a lack of thorough examination of certain psychometric properties, suggesting a need for further research and examination in order to advance the field of childhood maltreatment assessment.

Altered brain creatine cycle metabolites in bipolar I disorder with childhood abuse: A 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy study

Danielle Soares Bio et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with bipolar disorder (BD) had higher scores on the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and higher rates of severity of sexual and physical abuse compared to healthy control (HC) subjects. The severity of physical and sexual abuse was associated with changes in anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) metabolites in BD patients only, suggesting a potential link between childhood abuse and creatine metabolism in the ACC. Further research is needed to explore the mechanism underlying the association between childhood abuse and worse clinical outcomes in BD.
